North Fork dog in shelters for 3 years finds home after ‘sign’ from owner’s passed pet

She finally fetched forever.

Violet, a mixed-breed dog on the East End of Long Island who spent over three years in shelters, is finally going to a home filled with love after her new owners received a “sign” from their recently deceased pet.

“We said goodbye to our 14-year-old dog, Ginger, on January 3,” Violet’s new human, Debbie Rutherford, told Patch. “Before she left us, I told her if she sees another dog that could use our love, she should send me a sign.”

Days later, Debbie and her husband, Mike Rutherford, saw a post in the local outlet about five-year-old Violet, who came to the North Fork Animal Welfare League’s Southold location from Brookhaven in November.

For weeks, the facility had posted SOS messages on its social media to try and do something for the “overall great dog.”

“She is a mature, highly affectionate girl. She is quiet, sleeps through the night,” they wrote of Violet, who has “unique markings on her nose.”

When the shelter finally posted the good news of her adoption on January 19, over 280 commented in communal excitement.

“I AM LITERALLY JUMPING FOR JOY!!!!” one wrote.

And for her new parents, a void has been filled.

“Violet brought back the smiles to our home. She is such a well-behaved and loving pup, I can’t imagine why she wasn’t adopted sooner,” Rutherford added.

“Although, I’m thankful she wasn’t because I cannot imagine our home without her.”
