Nvidia has reportedly stopped supplying chips for its flagship RTX 5090 graphics cards as it shifts focus to more profitable GPUs for artificial intelligence.

The RTX 5090 is Nvidia’s most powerful consumer graphics card, designed for high-end gaming and demanding PC workloads. However, a new leak suggests the company could be preparing to discontinue the GPU, including versions sold in China.

While Nvidia has not confirmed the reports, the rumored decision comes as demand for powerful AI hardware continues to grow, with companies investing heavily in data centers.

Nvidia could discontinue RTX 5090 to prioritize AI

According to hardware leaker @hongxing2020, a factory notice claims Nvidia will no longer manufacture RTX 5090 graphics cards, including the RTX 5090 D variants sold in China.

Another leaker, @Zed__Wang, backed up the claim, suggesting Nvidia plans to reserve the chips used in the RTX 5090 for professional graphics cards and data center hardware instead.

The reported notice also claims Nvidia plans to introduce an RTX 5080 with 24GB of memory, replacing the current 16GB model as its highest-end consumer graphics card.

Neither claim has been officially confirmed, and Nvidia has not publicly announced plans to discontinue the RTX 5090.

The reported move would allow Nvidia to use its most powerful chips in products designed for AI development and professional workloads, where graphics cards can sell for significantly higher prices.

For comparison, Nvidia’s RTX Pro 5500 features the same number of processing cores as the RTX 5090 but includes considerably more memory for professional applications.

Meanwhile, the company’s RTX Pro 6000 can sell for around $15,000, making professional hardware a potentially more profitable use of its chips.

If the reports are accurate, Nvidia would effectively be prioritizing its AI and professional customers over gamers looking to purchase its most powerful graphics card.

However, that doesn’t mean the RTX 5090 would immediately disappear from stores. Retailers and Nvidia’s manufacturing partners could still have existing inventory available for purchase. If production has stopped, supplies would likely decrease over time, potentially pushing prices higher.

Nvidia’s next generation of consumer graphics cards, the RTX 60 series, is also rumored to be some time away, with recent reports suggesting a release in late 2027 or potentially 2028.

For now, the RTX 5090 remains Nvidia’s flagship consumer graphics card, and its reported discontinuation should be treated as a rumor until the company confirms its plans.

The latest rumor follows reports from February 2026 that Nvidia was cutting RTX 50-series production and delaying future consumer graphics cards due to an ongoing memory shortage.

According to The Information, Nvidia was also reportedly postponing its RTX 50 Super lineup and pushing back the release of its next-generation RTX 60 series, which had previously been expected in late 2027.
