The Issue: New York getting rid of the Regents exams as a graduation requirement by fall 2027.

The demise of the New York Regents exams and the Regents diploma is, unfortunately, a sign of the educational times we live in (“Regents Exams, RIP,” Editorial, Nov. 11).

Tests like the Regents provide proof that students have mastered the required knowledge and skills of a given curriculum.

While our competitors in the global economy place a greater emphasis on student mastery of skills, too many states are dumbing down what is required of their students. Leaders in education act far too concerned with passing fads, rather than preparing the next generation to compete and succeed in the 21st century global economy.

Ditching the Regents gives inferior teachers a free pass, since it is one of the only uniform metrics of academic achievement throughout the state. It also deprives the best students from achieving accurate ranking.

The only winners in this misguided surrender to DEI are bad teachers and the teachers union. Perhaps that’s what Chancellor Lester Young Jr. really wants.

Mel Young

Boca Raton, Fla.

Once again, the teachers unions win and our students lose.

The teachers want no more Regents testing because they want to give out diplomas even when the kids can’t read at grade level or understand math. It’s the same old story: lower standards and the union teachers look good, even when they’re failing our kids.

We should raise standards, not lower them, and hold students accountable. Because if you don’t, they will pay the price for the rest of their lives. Don’t enable the union to hurt our children.

In one short editorial, The Post has explained the causes, beneficiaries, victims and results of the “equity” philosophy.

This excellent editorial should be framed and hung on the wall of every politician and educator in the country.

New York was once recognized as having a top education system, because of the learning that went into preparing for the Regents.

Ever since the unions became involved, they have tried to reduce standards — and now get rid of the them.

The Issue: Liberal pundits suggest Justice Sonia Sotomayor step down so they can quickly replace her.

If this election showed anything, it’s that the Democrats enjoy eating their own (“Replace justice ‘with VP,’ ” Nov. 11).

An example is their recent efforts suggesting that a Hispanic female Supreme Court justice walk away from a lifetime appointment. It is breathtaking in its hypocrisy.

Could it be the Democrats want to alienate minorities even more? The fact that Justice Sonia Sotomayor is from The Bronx shouldn’t be lost on anyone.

The Democrats are the party that has lost its moral compass.

They don’t even try to hide their contempt for this country. Their only “constituency” is their own self-interests.

John Fleming

Punta Gorda, Fla.

I am no fan of Justice Sonia Sotomayor. But liberals have some nerve pushing her to step down because she is 70 and has type 1 diabetes and replacing her now serves their agenda.

You stay there, justice. May you have good health and serve for many years to come.

Louie Scarcella

The idea that Vice President Kamala Harris could serve as a justice on the Supreme Court is idiotic. No explanation necessary.
