The beloved Queens soldier killed in an Iranian attack on a US base should have a street named after her, the borough president said Thursday — as her devastated mom sobbed, “She died for her country.”
There’s a plan to honor Sgt. Angel Sarah Rampersad, 28, of Ozone Park — killed Friday during the attack at Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan — for her bravery on the street outside her family home, Queens Borough President Donovan Richards said.
“She made the ultimate sacrifice,” Richards said at a press conference. “Angel was a hero, plain and simple. No matter what you think of this war, what is not up for debate is the bravery it takes to enlist like Angel did seven years ago.”
“She put her community before herself,” he said. “Her legacy of selflessness and sacrifice will live on forever here in Ozone Park, and across Queens, but not just Queens, across this nation,” he said.
“At minimum, the least we can do is rename this street in her honor and work with the school construction authority and DOE to name a school in her honor,” Richards said, while standing outside her family home on 96th Street.
Rampersad’s heartbroken mom, Carol Acevedo, teared up as she recalled her daughter’s dedication to the Army.
“My daughter was a good, good soldier. She fought in this country, and she died for this country, and I am a mother who is highly proud of her,” Acevedo said.
“And I know she was really, really focused on what she was doing. She loved it.”
Rampersad — a graduate of John Jay College of Criminal Justice, who played the drums — migrated from Trinidad with her mom at age 2 and wanted to join the military at a young age, said her aunt Judy Rackal.
“We are so proud of our Angel,” Rackal said — calling her death “an unbearable tragedy.”
“Angel was always a happy, contented, and calm person all through her life. In the face of every crisis that her family encountered, she would be the calming element all the time,” Rackal said. “She had a quiet strength even from a child.”
Rampersad was one of three soldiers reportedly killed during the missile attack on the US base in Jordan, including Army First Lt. Tyler James Feehan, 25, of Hawaii, and Pfc. Isabella Gonzales, 19, of Texas.
Rampersad was identified by the Pentagon Tuesday, as American forces bombed Iran for an 11th straight night.
Another US service member, Sgt. Michael Emmanuel Swinton, of North Carolina, was reportedly also killed disarming a downed Iranian drone in Iraq on Sunday.
Friends of Rampersad on Wednesday remembered her as a strong-willed “social butterfly” who dreamed of seeing the world while serving her country.
Rampersad’s family is still “awaiting the release of our daughter to make final arrangements” for her burial, Rackal said Thursday.
