A California mayor is getting trolled on social media for celebrating the victory of a local ultimate frisbee team after the wave of major sports teams that have left her city in recent years.

Mayor Barbara Lee of Oakland, who is up for re-election this year, is featured in a video from Oakland’s City Hall explaining who the Oakland Spiders frisbee team is and congratulating them for winning the 2026 Ultimate Frisbee association championship.

One X account @FireBarbaraLee said that Lee has “ruined Oakland,” and blamed her for the loss of three sports teams.

“Oakland lost the Raiders. Lost the Warriors. Lost the A’s. Three real teams. Gone,” the post said.

“So Barbara Lee is on Instagram celebrating the Oakland Spiders, an ultimate frisbee team. “8 legs, 1 heart. Let’s Go Oakland,” the post continued. “That is the mayor of a city that lost the Raiders, the Warriors, and the A’s. Out here posting like a frisbee title brings the Town back.”

The user went on to recall the large championship celebrations Oakland once held for its major sports franchises, arguing that the Spiders’ title underscored how dramatically the city’s professional sports landscape has changed.

“Now City Hall is hyping a disc because that is all that is left,” they continued. “This is who has ruined Oakland. Leave Barbara Lee off your ballot for Mayor!”

Others joined in the criticism in the comments. In the comments, X user @5150Brando wrote “Talk about the soft bigotry of low expectations” while @JimmyMac1960 wrote “Even the rate left-wing of my family that still lives in Joakland is fed up, and that’s saying something”

The departure of major professional sports teams from Oakland happened over the course of five years.

In 2019 is when Oakland lost the Warriors to San Francisco, then in 2020 the city lost the Raiders to Las Vegas and then in 2024 the city lost the A’s as well.
