An official Sonic the Hedgehog Discord server has been created, and it’s going just about as well as you’d expect.
On October 5, Sega launched its first-ever Sonic the Hedgehog Discord server, giving fans around the world a place to share their love for the Blue Blur.
However, mere hours after the server opened its doors, the community descended into chaos, with members bombarding the chat with inappropriate images, memes, and profane messages that eventually forced moderators to briefly lock it down.
Sonic Discord descends into chaos
“This official server is home to fans, SEGA Staff and developers, and our moderation team. Whether you’re a longtime fan or new to the world of Sonic, welcome!” reads the server description, before outlining its housekeeping rules.
According to the Sonic Discord’s rules, fans must keep posts family-friendly, protect personal information, and treat each other with kindness and respect. Political campaigning and religious promotion are also prohibited, while discussions of major story moments must use spoiler tags.
Judging from the sheer amount of screenshots and clips I’ve had to sift through to save your eyes, it’s no wonder Sega had to pull the plug and put temporary chat restrictions in place. Let’s just say I may need some eye-bleach for some of those Sonic fan art images I’ve seen.
While the Sonic Discord is now up and running, it’s worth noting that the server also bans AI-generated creative content, including art, writing, music, videos, and, rather specifically, Eggman dating simulators.
Yes, you read that correctly. “Human-made Eggman Dating Simulators are (probably) OK, but why would you do this?” reads a line under the rules page.
Sega also mentions that users who violate any of these rules “may be removed without warning” and urges fans to follow them closely. It’s pretty standard stuff, well, minus the Eggman dating sim content.
If the community does manage to behave, Sega has stated that they’ll have several staff and special guests appearing from time to time, with the company asking fans to “treat them kindly so we can convince them to return!”
Of course, time will soon tell whether Sega can keep the Sonic Discord community in check or if they will have to pull the plug on the server for good.
