CV NEWS FEED // Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine signed legislation Nov. 26 requiring students to use bathrooms that correspond with their biological sex.
The Columbus Dispatch reported that the new law requires students from kindergarten through college to use bathrooms and overnight accommodations that align with their biological sex. The law bans multi-occupancy gender neutral bathrooms and allows single-use and family facilities. It does not apply to employees, emergencies, or people assisting a small child or disabled person.
“Common sense is on a winning streak in America today,” Center for Christian Virtue President Aaron Baer said in a statement. “No student should be forced to go into the bathroom or locker room with a student of the opposite sex, and Ohio’s kids are better protected now because of Governor DeWine’s decision to sign this bill.”
As CatholicVote previously reported, the Ohio Senate passed the bill Nov. 13 in a 24-7 vote.
Republican State Sens. Jerry Cirino and Andrew Brenner sponsored the bill, and other Republicans, such as State Sen. Niraj Antani, supported the law.
“This is common sense policy that will ensure the safety and security of our school children,” Antani said. “No young girl should be forced to go into the same restroom with a biological male.”
