A man has died and several others have been injured after an incident on a rollercoaster at a Six Flags theme park in Georgia.

Eyewitnesses said the incident took place on the Goliath rollercoaster at Six Flags Over Georgia, about 15 miles (25km) northwest of Atlanta.

Officials from the Cobb County Police Department did not confirm how the person died or what caused the others to be injured.

However, theme park-goers told local media they saw a man ejected from the ride.

Cobb County Commission Chair Lisa Cupid said: "A terrible tragedy occurred today at Six Flags Over Georgia. One person has died, and others were injured. It is my understanding that next of kin have been notified.

"Cobb County Police officers responded immediately, and detectives with the Major Crimes Unit are investigating the circumstances surrounding this incident. The County is working closely with Six Flags Over Georgia and other appropriate partners as the investigation proceeds.

"I cannot imagine the horror the patrons and employees witnessed today, and my heart aches for the family who lost a loved one.

"Additional information will be released by law enforcement as it is confirmed."

She continued: "Six Flags Over Georgia is a significant part of our tourism landscape, drawing visitors from across our county, our state, and the Southeast. I look forward to learning more as the investigation unfolds.

"In the meantime, please keep in your thoughts the family of the deceased, those who were injured, the employees and leadership of Six Flags, and our community.

"We are all grappling with how something so devastating could happen at a place that has given generations of families such happy memories."

Eyewitnesses told local media they saw the man ejected from the car, falling and hitting the ride three times.

A spokesman for Six Flags said: "We are deeply saddened by the guest incident at our park today. Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with the guest’s family, friends, and loved ones.

"We are also providing support to the guests and team members affected," the spokesperson continued.

"The park team and local authorities responded immediately, and we are cooperating fully with local authorities as they complete their investigation.

"Out of respect for the family’s privacy, we will not be sharing additional details at this time."

City of Mableton Mayor Michael Owens said: "We are deeply saddened by the tragic incident at Six Flags Over Georgia today.

"Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with the individual’s family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time.

"Mableton Public Safety Director Dr Kerry Stallings is coordinating with Cobb County Police and park security as the situation is addressed.

"We are grateful to the personnel responding to this incident and will continue to support coordination with the appropriate authorities. Out of respect for the family and the ongoing investigation, we will refrain from commenting further at this time."

According to the park's website, the Goliath ride opened in 2006 and has an elevation of 200ft (60m), a 170ft plunge, and a top speed of 70mph.

Six Flags is the largest amusement park operator in North America, covering 20 amusement parks, 14 water parks, and nine resorts across Canada, the US, and Mexico.

This comes just weeks after one of the group's flagship parks, Six Flags Magic Mountain, announced it would retire the famous X2 rollercoaster amid lawsuits alleging serious brain injury caused by the ride.

Six Flags recently settled a wrongful-death lawsuit from the family of a 22-year-old man who died after riding the coaster in 2022, and three more lawsuits alleging traumatic brain injuries were filed last week.
