The Fort Wayne Police Department reported receiving multiple 911 calls just before 10:30 p.m. about a shooting in a residential area.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene, with people “fleeing in all directions” when police arrived.
Officers found that the shooting occurred during a gathering of high school-age individuals, with ten people sustaining non-life-threatening injuries, police confirmed.
“It is unknown at this time how many suspects were involved with the shooting,” police stated.
Fort Wayne Mayor Sharon Tucker expressed her sorrow over the incident and emphasized the city’s commitment to addressing the tragedy.
“My heart is heavy trying to process this event,” Tucker said, adding that law enforcement is working “tirelessly” to find answers.
“The safety and security of our community are vital to help ensure a better future for Fort Wayne. My prayer is that we’ll come together unified as residents and neighbors and not accept this type of behavior,” she added.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) lists homicide as a leading cause of death for teenagers aged 15 to 19, alongside accidental injuries and suicide.
