Only 1/3 of Americans feel ‘comfortable’ discussing abortion: survey

(LifeSiteNews) — A new quarterly poll from the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE) revealed a troubling climate for free expression in the United States, with only 32% of Americans saying they feel “very comfortable” sharing their views on abortion rights without fear of reprimand.

The findings came from the August 2026 National Speech Index, a survey designed by FIRE and conducted by the Dartmouth Polarization Research Lab. It sampled 1,000 Americans between July 7 and July 20 and carries a margin of error of ±3%. The index tracks public attitudes toward freedom of speech and the First Amendment over time.

Specifically on the topic of “abortion rights,” just under one-third of respondents reported feeling very comfortable discussing the topic freely. The data also highlight a striking pattern revealing that Americans who self-identify as far-right and far-left express a significantly greater willingness to engage others on such hot-button issues.

According to FIRE’s analysis, 55% of very liberal respondents and 52% of very conservative respondents said they feel very comfortable discussing abortion rights compared with only about 25% among self-identified liberals, moderates, and conservatives.

The survey painted an equally constrained picture on other high-stakes, and even taboo, issues. Only 23% of Americans overall feel very comfortable discussing the Israel-Palestine conflict “without fear of reprimand.” Comfort levels remained low across the ideological spectrum on the topic.

Regarding the Israeli-American war against Iran, just 29% of respondents said they feel very comfortable sharing their views. Here again, the extremes diverge from the middle: 42% of very liberal Americans and 54% of very conservative Americans reported high comfort while rates among liberals, moderates, and conservatives hovered between 22% and 28%.

According to FIRE analysis, the results underscored a broader problem of self-censorship and reluctance to speak on highly contested subjects.

“Many Americans have come to expect that sharing views some consider controversial will get them fired, kicked off social media, or even hunted down by the government,” FIRE manager of polling and analytics Nathan Honeycutt said. “Ideally, everyone should be comfortable expressing their opinions about key topics of debate, but most Americans don’t appear to feel that way.”

The August results suggested that, even on issues as central to American public debate as abortion, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and military action against Iran, large majorities of citizens remain hesitant to speak openly.
