A school shooter who killed three pupils and a teacher at an elementary school in Oregon has been named as John J Griffin.

The 16-year-old suspect has been identified following the horror attack on Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend on Thursday.

Griffin killed three children aged five, eight and 11 years old and a teacher, who are yet to be all publicly identified.

Fresh details revealed that a seven-year-old, who uses a wheelchair, was shot in the face during the attack, and a 54-year-old teacher was also critically injured in the shooting.

Law enforcement sources told CBS that the gun used was purchased by his mother.

Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz confirmed Kalub Giamanco, 36, shot Griffin during his attack on the school.

Mr Giamanco, a "lifelong Bend resident" and dad of two children who attend the school had heard the gunshots as he drove home for his lunch break.

His family said he is "not seeking recognition" but wishes to express his "gratitude to the first responders, school personnel, and community for the outpouring of love and support".

Mr Giamanco and his family have now "respectfully asked for privacy".

US President Donald Trump has praised Mr Giamanco for stopping Griffin, declaring him a "great hero".

Speaking to reporters at the White House, Mr Trump said the situation could have been "much worse" without intervention.

He said: "As bad as it was, we had a great hero that went in and did the business. It's a terrible thing, but thank goodness for a man who had a gun and knew how to use it."

Griffin forced entry into Silver Rail Elementary School by firing through the locked doors around 1pm local time, Bend police said.

Emergency services were shortly called to the scene after reports of gunfire.

Officers arrived at the school within three minutes, and found that Griffin had already been shot dead by Mr Giamanco.

Senator Ron Wyden of Oregon said of the shooting: "My heart is with the victims at Silver Rail Elementary School and their loved ones now facing the consequences of another school shooting in America.

"Once again we must ask how many schools must be shot up before Republicans agree to act to curb gun violence."

Police and federal investigators have not publicly identified a motive.

They are also investigating whether Griffin had a connection to Silver Rail Elementary School.

Police also confirmed that Griffin's mother has been "cooperative" with law enforcement so far in the investigation.
