Oreo enthusiasts were disappointed to learn food manufacturer Post Consumer Brands has discontinued the fan-favorite Oreo O's cereal before Christmas.

An X user wrote: '@Oreo please tell me that Oreo o's cereal is not being discontinued. Someone on Reddit is throwing around rumors.'

Post Consumer Brands confirmed it discontinued the Oreo O's cereal's departure would make room for their new product - Oreo Puffs.

'For those who love dunking their Oreo cookies in milk, Oreo Puffs cereal is a brand-new, delicious way to enjoy the taste of the iconic Oreo cookie - during breakfast time!,' TD Dixon, chief growth officer at Post Consumer Brands, said in a statement to The Food Network.

The spokesperson added the new Oreo-brand cereal would be a 'permanent addition' to store shelves.

Amid the uncertainty of Oreo O's return, social media users were left furious over the product change.

'So that's why I didn't see oreo o's on the shelf when I went shopping yesterday? My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined,' a Reddit user wrote

While Oreo O's may have started getting taken off shelves, the cereal boxes are still available to purchase on retail chains and e-commerce websites.

Reddit users were even more devastated than X users over Oreo O's' discontinuation.

One person admitted they'd 'never understand' the decision and always wondered why the cereal recipe allegedly changed.

'Really disappointing - Oreo O's had like the best texture, I doubt these'll try to mimic it,' a Reddit user wrote.

Others claimed the cereal was their 'favorite' and the company's discontinuation decision 'p***es them off'.

Several Reddit users also trashed Oreo Puffs even though Post Consumer Brands has not even released the product yet.

One person claimed the Oreo Puffs looked like a 'huge downgrade' and that replacing the Oreo O's could be 'potentially troubling development.'

'I'm not happy about the replacement. I wouldn't be surprised if they are just cocoa puffs,' a Reddit user wrote.

However, several Instagram users were much nicer in their comments about the Oreo Puffs news.

Oreo O's was created by Post Consumer Brands (then Post cereal) and released in 1997.

The cereal was an instant success and by the 2000s, shoppers worldwide could purchase Oreo O's in stores.

Although its popularity remained on the rise, the product was discontinued in 2007 - the same year Kraft sold Post cereals for nearly $3 billion.

Oreo O's remained a popular product in South Korea after it was taken off store shelves nationwide.

However, Post Consumer Brands announced Oreo O's would return to the US in 2017 for $3.98 a box.

Oreo O's continued to be popular in the US even when the price rose to $5 in several states.

An 11-oz box of Oreo O's is currently available to purchase on Target's website for $4.39.

Shoppers hoping to purchase a 17-oz box of Oreo O's for a low price could buy one on Amazon for about $5.

Oreo O's was discontinued in the US back in 2007 but returned in 2017

Social media users have compared Oreo Puffs to CoCoa Puffs

Oreo Puffs will include a mix of chocolate-flavored wafers and marshmallows - a combination that social media users have compared to Cocoa Puffs.

The new cereal will be available at various retailers nationwide, including Walmart and Target.

Unlike Oreo O's, the cost of an average-sized box of Oreo Puffs will cost $4.99, according to a press release.

The Oreo brand itself has also been in the news after its maker, Mondelez International, began eyeing a takeover of Hershey.

Mondelez International, the Kraft Foods spin-off, is valued at $84 billion, while Hershey is worth around $35 billion.
