Variety Awards Circuit section is the home for all awards news and related content throughout the year, featuring the following: the official predictions for the upcoming Oscars, Emmys, Grammys and Tony Awards ceremonies, curated by Variety senior awards editor Clayton Davis. The prediction pages reflect the current standings in the race and do not reflect personal preferences for any individual contender. As other formal (and informal) polls suggest, competitions are fluid and subject to change based on buzz and events. Predictions are updated every Thursday.
Overall Oscars Commentary (Updated Jan. 3, 2025): The BAFTA longlist has echoed the sentiment of this season even more — it’s all wide open for any film and any performance.
Jacques Audiard’s “Emilia Pérez,” a Spanish-language music thriller picked up by Netflix in Cannes, emerged ahead of the race with mentions in 15 categories, including best film, director, leading actress and three in the supporting actress list. Meanwhile, “Conclave,” Focus Features’ Papal mystery-thriller from Edward Berger set within the Vatican, has 14, including best film, director, and leading actor for Ralph Fiennes. Could this be a race where the two are duking it out in the end?
Not with Brady Corbet’s “The Brutalist,” Sean Baker’s “Anora” and Jon M. Chu’s “Wicked” still very much in the fight. Along with “Emilia” and “Conclave,” any five of these movies can win best picture.
Pablo Larrain’s “Maria” and Pedro Almodovar’s “The Room Next Door” took the most significant blows from the international voting bloc, as both were completely shut out from the longlists. In addition, RaMell Ross’ “Nickel Boys” only managed a single mention for adapted screenplay. Noteworthy, “American Fiction” (2023) also nabbed a single mention from the longlist for adapted, which it eventually was nominated and won, leading its way to its Oscar victory. Ergo, it’s never over until the ballots are officially in.
Next on the docket is the Golden Globes this weekend, followed by the SAG Awards nominations and the Critics Choice weighing in on the year.
Category updates are below, and ranking charts are also being overhauled. Where do you think the race stands?
The 97th Oscars will be held on Sunday, March 2.
