Out of nowhere, Hunter Biden has dropped his paintbrush and picked up the art of Twitter posting.
The former first son returned to posting in May, sharing intermittently about his addiction recovery and sobriety milestones, but then charged into Twitter replies. He has already gained well over 200,000 followers and counting. He certainly won over Candace Owens, with whom he sat down for an interview recently. Some of Hunter’s replies are genuinely funny, and his beef with Jake Tapper, whom he has nicknamed the “Brick Tamland of his generation,” is delicious entertainment. Tapper had written a piece Tuesday dissecting Jill Biden’s claim that her husband was mentally sharp even up to the summer of 2024. (By the way, during the Biden years, Tapper wasn’t exactly clear-eyed when it came to his coverage of the president’s declining mental faculties, and the book he co-wrote with reporter Alex Thompson sure seemed like a great career move to whitewash his own participation in the media’s nearly four-year-long cover-up.)

He also called out some members of the Trump family who have done rather well for themselves since their father retook the Oval Office:

Eric is taking an Israeli drone company public for $1.5B in the middle of a war with Iran that nobody wanted. And I know: ‘But what about your paintings, Hunter?’ Please.”
Dare I say, he has a point.
So let me get this straight.

And I am old enough to remember when some turbo online, conspiratorial MAGA supporters actually believed that Joe Biden had died in office and was replaced by a hologram. With that context, Hunter’s new “Trump is missing and the guy you see on the screen is actually a clone” bit is hysterical.

It seems to me the only people who aren’t loving Hunter’s newfound hobby are humorless, partisan Republicans and literal-minded MAGA accounts. A lot of normal Americans, on the other hand, love a comeback story and someone who is charismatic and brutally honest.

Hunter was never a saint. He did a lot of bad things, but got lucky because his pops gave him a pardon. His time serving on the board of Ukrainian gas company Burisma was, in the words of Jon Stewart, “corrupt on its face.” He had a child with a stripper out of wedlock. But none of these things means one cannot appreciate his posting, or his recovery from drug addiction.
And if he continues calling out the Trump family as he has, the former first son will gain some America First followers. The truth is, most Americans — besides online MAGA partisans, GOP operatives, and Fox News viewers — couldn’t care less about what Hunter and his father did years ago. It’s over. Done. Time to move on. But they likely care about what unethical things the current president is doing now.
There will come a time when the right’s refusal to even acknowledge the Trump administration’s corruption scandals will be almost as embarrassing as Jake Tapper and the corporate media’s refusal to report on Joe Biden’s mental decline. The suffocating hypocrisy will need a pressure release. Hunter Biden is already providing that, and is doing so with surprising humor.
