It nearly went down in East Lansing!
One of the first things you learn as a young sports fan are rivalries, with Michigan and Michigan State being near the top of the list — the two schools absolutely despise each other. And that was on full display Sunday during the closing of a men’s college basketball contest between the two.
With just a few ticks to go in the second half, the Spartans had the victory locked up, and at this particular moment, Michigan guard Justin Pippen was at the free throw line shooting two shots. While Pippen was at the line, his teammates Phat Phat Brooks (what a name) and L.J. Cason were mid-court and standing on the Spartans logo. That ended up being a big no-no, as Brooks and Cason were blocking a Michigan State tradition from being done. Szymon Zapala, a senior for the Spartans, was about to walk to the middle of the court to give the logo a kiss, a tradition that began 30 years ago and started by Shawn Respert. The tradition is meant for seniors who play their last home game at Breslin Center. However, while Zapala was headed there, Brooks and Cason made it clear they weren’t going to let him do it.
From there, we got pushes and shoves to give us a little wackiness just in time for March Madness!
