Hong Kong residents can expect to enjoy discounts of up to 30 per cent at over 3,600 restaurants, cafes, supermarkets and convenience stores as celebrations for National Day on October 1.

Food and catering businesses on Friday said they would be offering an array of deals, such as cheaper groceries at supermarkets, a 30 per cent discount on egg tarts, 25 per cent off on vegetarian shark fin soup, and one-for-one buffet lunches or dinners at several hotels.

Simon Wong Kit-lung, executive director of restaurant chain LH Group and chairman of the Quality Tourism Services Association, said that in spite of the city’s slump in consumer spending, the discounts were not focused on stimulating business but were “celebratory offers”.

“It is like when you hold a party to celebrate your 75th birthday, you’re not doing it with the expectation of receiving more cash gifts than you pay for hosting the party,” he said.

Hong Kong’s year-on-year retail sales have been in contraction for months amid a downturn in stock and property markets and a growing trend of residents crossing over to the mainland to shop and dine on weekends.
