More than 90 per cent of student suicides in Hong Kong over the past five years involved youngsters aged 12 and above, according to education authorities, with many cases resulting from negative interpersonal relationships, learning issues and poor mental health.
The Education Bureau said on Wednesday that 131 suicides among primary and secondary students were recorded over the past five years.
It also found that the number of students struggling with mental health issues increased by 27 per cent between 2023 and 2024.
The bureau shared the figures as part of a written replies to lawmakers.
A breakdown of the figures showed there were 28 deaths by suicide in 2024, down from 32 the year before.
But the figure from 2023 represented a sharp increase from the 25 recorded in both 2022 and 2021.
