SALEM, OR - Local parents Terry and Jessica Pritchard decided to abort their baby after receiving the devastating news that he would be among the happiest demographic on the planet.
The Pritchards were left distraught at the 20-week ultrasound visit when the doctor sadly informed the them that their baby boy had an extra chromosome, which would lead to his having a normal lifespan with above-average happiness.
"No. Not a happy child," said Terry, overcome with grief. "Anything but that. Think of all the joy he will bring to our family and to the world. It's awful. With our love and support, he could lead a happy, meaningful life, and I simply can't bear it. He must be killed."
Researchers say that most expectant parents experience a sense of grief upon learning their child may be different from what they first expected, but that there are other options besides murder. "Studies show that there are actually other ways to process that discovery," said Dr. Liam Maple. "For example, you can talk to other parents who have children with Down Syndrome. You can seek counseling and pastoral guidance, join a support group, or also simply talk to adults with Down Syndrome to learn about their lives. All of these are excellent options that do not involve homicide."
At publishing time, the Pritchards had explained to a couple suffering infertility that they were sorry about not giving up their baby for adoption, but it seemed like a lot of trouble.
