A Path of Exile 2 player became the game’s first-ever martyr after deleting their level 100 character to benefit every player in the game, but almost nobody noticed it had happened.
The newly added Martyr system gives PoE 2 players a unique choice once they reach level 100. Instead of continuing to play their beloved character, the devs have taken a leaf out of Nier: Automata’s book by deleting their character to help other players on the server.
The mechanic has been widely praised by the community, with popular Path of Exile streamer Zizaran calling it “one of the coolest things ever seen in a game.” However, the devs have now revealed that the very first player to make the ultimate sacrifice for the community did so in complete obscurity.
PoE 2 devs thank nameless hero
During an interview with PoE YouTuber Zizaran, PoE 2 developers Mark Roberts and Jonathan Rogers paid respects to the hero who gave up their save.
“I just want to pay some respects for the standard league’s first martyr who silently offed his character, and everyone got the bonus, and no one saw or mentioned anything, and no one seemed to know,” said Roberts.
According to Roberts, the player had a Korean name and was ranked 782 on the game’s ladder when they chose to sacrifice their character. As for why the player’s sacrifice went largely unnoticed, the developers said it was due to how Path of Exile 2’s ladder system works.

“Unfortunately, the community team didn’t know that there was that person on Standard. And part of the reason for that is because there’s a thing with the ladder, where if [the player] doesn’t appear in the top 10, then it only shows it when you go to the full ladder screen,” said Rogers.
It’s because of this bug that PoE 2’s first sacrificial hero tragically went unnoticed, but their sacrifice has not been forgotten. According to Rogers, their charitable action has now led to an influx of other selfless heroes who are giving up their beloved characters for the greater good of the community.
This isn’t the first time a player has made headlines for their goodwill towards fellow players, as back in 2024, Elden Ring icon ‘Let Me Solo Her’ revealed they had spent roughly 1,200 hours in Elden Ring helping players fight Malenia, one of the game’s hardest bosses.
Fans of Umamusume, the viral horse girl racing game, have even raised money to repair stables for the real horses that inspired the game and helped preserve the resting spot of a racing legend.
