The PlayStation Vita has gained an unexpected new feature thanks to a homebrew developer, with a new app allowing Sony’s handheld to stream Xbox Cloud Gaming titles through Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.

Called GreenVita, the application connects directly to Microsoft’s Xbox Cloud Gaming service, letting players access supported Game Pass games without needing to own an Xbox console. Instead, games are streamed from Microsoft’s servers while the Vita handles the display, controls, audio, and internet connection.

An active Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription is still required to use the service, and the app only works on modified PlayStation Vita systems with homebrew installed.

GreenVita brings Xbox Cloud Gaming to PlayStation Vita

Unlike browser-based streaming solutions, GreenVita is a native PlayStation Vita application built specifically for Sony’s handheld.

To sign in, users authenticate through Microsoft’s device code system. GreenVita displays a code on the Vita, which players enter on another device to log into their Microsoft account instead of typing credentials directly on the handheld.

One of the application’s biggest technical features is support for the Vita’s hardware H.264 video decoder. Rather than relying on the handheld’s CPU to decode streamed video, GreenVita uses dedicated hardware designed specifically for video playback, reducing system load and improving streaming performance.

While this doesn’t eliminate internet latency or server delays, it helps address one of the Vita’s biggest hardware limitations when streaming modern games.

Homebrew is required and limitations remain

GreenVita is not compatible with standard retail PlayStation Vita consoles. Players must have a modified system with HENkaku enabled, VitaShell installed, and the Unsafe Homebrew setting activated before installing the application through a VPK package.

The developer also notes that network quality will have a significant impact on performance. Because the Vita uses older Wi-Fi hardware, a strong wireless connection and low latency are recommended to reduce compression, input delay, and connection interruptions.

The handheld’s hardware also presents other limitations. Its 960 × 544 display may make text-heavy games difficult to read, while some Xbox titles may require alternative control mappings because the Vita lacks the full button layout of an Xbox controller.

GreenVita remains an early-stage project, and the current release focuses primarily on Xbox Cloud Gaming rather than streaming directly from a personal Xbox console. Bugs, compatibility issues, and game-specific problems are still expected as development continues.

GreenVita is the latest example of developers finding creative ways to bring games to unlikely platforms.

Earlier this month, a pair of creators even turned YouTube into a playable version of Mario Kart, using the platform’s 360-degree video and subtitle features to let players race along Rainbow Road directly in their browser without downloading any software.
