Pokemon drops Unite from 2027 esports circuit as Champions seemingly excludes mobile players

Play! Pokemon is removing Pokemon Unite from its Championship Series in 2027, while its new Pokemon Champions device policy appears to prevent VGC competitors from playing on mobile devices.

The changes were revealed as part of a wider update outlining plans for the 2027 Pokemon Championship Series. Alongside revised qualification rules, age divisions, and event locations, Play! Pokemon confirmed that Unite will no longer be included in the Championship Series or Pokemon World Championships.

Unite originally joined the Pokemon World Championships in 2022 and has since become one of the event’s major team-based competitions. The 2026 Unite Championship Series offered more than $1 million in total prizes, including $500,000 at the World Championships.

Pokemon Unite gets standalone tournament in Japan

Rather than ending official Unite competition entirely, The Pokemon Company will replace its Championship Series presence with a separate event called Pokemon Unite Aeos Crown 2027 Tokyo.

Online Regional Qualifiers are tentatively scheduled to begin in November 2026 and will be open to eligible teams from regions around the world. The final tournament is planned for late March 2027 in Tokyo, Japan, with up to 32 teams competing in person.

Teams that win their respective Regional Qualifiers will receive invitations and travel awards for the Tokyo event. Prize money will also be available during both the qualifiers and final tournament, although specific amounts have not yet been revealed.

Pokemon Champions restricted to Switch consoles

Another potentially significant change affects Pokemon Champions, which became the official software for VGC Championship Series matches during the 2026 season.

Pokemon Champions launched for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 on April 8 before arriving on iOS and Android on June 17. The game supports cross-platform battles, allowing mobile users to compete directly against players on Nintendo consoles.

However, the newly announced device policy says 2027 VGC competitors will be able to use consoles from the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 families. It does not list phones or tablets as eligible tournament devices.

While Play! Pokemon has not explicitly stated that the mobile version is banned from Championship Series competition, the wording seemingly means mobile-only Champions players will need access to a Nintendo Switch system to compete at official VGC events.

A separate device policy will be announced for the 2027 Pokemon World Championships, meaning the rules for Worlds could still differ from the wider Championship Series.
