Pokemon shiny hunter builds insane 58-console rig for “one-in-nine-million” Golduck

Pokemon shiny hunter Professor Rex has assembled a massive 58-console setup to search for what he describes as a one-in-nine-million Shiny Golduck encounter.

Rex unveiled the setup during Safari Week, an annual community event where players search for Shiny Pokemon inside Safari Zones and similar locations across the series. The 2026 event runs from July 17 through July 26.

Unlike conventional Shiny hunts, Safari Zone encounters can flee before the player successfully catches them. This means hunters can spend thousands of encounters finding a Shiny, only to watch it immediately escape.

58 consoles are searching for the same Shiny

“I have assembled the craziest shiny hunting setup in the world,” Rex said while showing off the collection of consoles.

The rig consists of 25 Wii consoles and 33 Nintendo GameCubes, bringing the total to 58 systems. Rex has connected them so every game can be operated simultaneously using the inputs from a single controller.

Every system is searching the water inside the Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire Safari Zone for one specific target: a level 25 Shiny Golduck.

Golduck only accounts for 5% of encounters while surfing in the northwestern Safari Zone area. Each Golduck can appear between levels 25 and 40, while the base chance of encountering any Shiny Pokemon in the Generation 3 games is one in 8,192.

The target’s level is what makes the hunt particularly unusual. Psyduck does not normally evolve into Golduck until level 33, but the Safari Zone can generate wild Golduck as low as level 25.

That means Golduck encountered between levels 25 and 32 are technically underleveled compared to one obtained through evolution. Rex is specifically targeting the lowest possible level, which he described as a one-in-nine-million encounter.

Even finding the Shiny would not necessarily end the hunt. Pokemon in the Ruby and Sapphire Safari Zone initially have a 15% chance to escape after a failed turn, while an immediate Safari Ball only has an approximately 12.33% chance to catch Golduck.

Players can improve those odds through specific Poke Block strategies, but the encounter can still end without the Pokemon being caught depending on the method used.

After eight hours of hunting across the 58 systems, Rex said the setup had generated 31,000 encounters but produced only a single Shiny Psyduck. The level 25 Shiny Golduck remained missing, although the stream raised $200 for Starlight Canada during Safari Week’s fifth day.
