Pokemon TCG Pocket is set to get some much-needed competition when an old rival joins the F2P mobile card game market.

Pokemon TCG Pocket is one of the most popular mobile card games, generating almost 150 million U.S. dollars during its first month. Since then, the popular card-collecting game has gone from strength to strength, releasing new sets, trading, and events to keep players invested.

The highly-anticipated ranked mode is also in the works, which will soon enable collectors to put their best decks to the test. Despite these updates, TCG Pocket is finally getting some much-needed competition in the form of an age-old rival.

TCG Pocket has a new rival

On March 16, the Digimon TCG X account teased a new title — Digimon Alysion, a free-to-play online card game that will be released on iOS and Android.

While the upcoming card game doesn’t have a release date, the trailer does give us an early look into the beastly battles. Just like TCG Pocket, Digimon Alysion allows players to collect their favorite beasts and make decks from them. We also got an early look into the characters we’ll get to see, with Kanata Hondo, Futre, and Valner Dragnogh.

If that wasn’t enough, the mobile game will also include new Digimon like the pint-sized fluff ball Gemmon. Series classics like Agumon and Gabumon are also present, so there will be plenty of old and new decks to craft.

A closed-beta test is planned to be released at a later date, but so far, community reactions have been very positive, with many eager to dive in. “OMG, I am shaking,” wrote one excited fan on the Digimon Reddit page.

“I have been playing Pokemon TCG Pocket religiously and all I can think about is how I wish it were Digimon instead. If they pull this off I will be so happy!”

Others are hopeful that the game will include a more traditional battle system – an area that would set it apart from TCG Pocket’s simplified combat.

“I hope it’s not like Pokemon TCG Pocket though and actually simulates the real card game. Pocket’s mostly just a digital collecting simulator and boring af after a few days. The gameplay barely resembles the real game,” responded one commenter.

Either way, time will tell if Digimon Alysion has what it takes to claw out path alongside its old rival, or whether it will sink into obscurity.
