A Kentucky middle school teacher was arrested Friday after authorities accused her of grooming a student.
Sadie M. Flores, a 25-year-old teacher at Graves County Middle School, was charged with grooming, according to an Aug. 7 Graves County Sheriff’s Office (GCSO) press release. The allegations were reported to the Graves County School District Office, which then notified the sheriff’s office.
Flores was interviewed by GCSO detectives before being arrested, the GCSO said in the same release. She is currently in custody at an out-of -county detention center. An investigation is ongoing, and detectives have conducted interviews and seized electronic records.
Under Kentucky House Bill 4, which took effect on July 15, grooming a minor is a misdemeanor, according to WKYT. The charge is upgraded to a felony if a minor is under 12 years old. Under the law, teachers are required to participate in training aimed at preventing grooming and sexual misconduct.
Hadley Purcell, director of community impact at Lotus, a children’s advocacy and sexual violence resource center in Kentucky, reacted to the bill’s passing while speaking with WPSD Local 6.
“Grooming is a lot of time an entry way, a starting point, for child sexual abuse and exploitation,” Purcell said, according to the outlet.

Graves County Schools Superintendent Matt Madding issued a statement via the same GCSO press release, confirming Flores had been arrested.
“District administration was made aware of an allegation involving a teacher at Graves County Middle School. School officials immediately reported this information to the Graves County Sheriff’s Department for investigation.”
“We have since been informed that, as a result of that investigation, charges have been filed against this teacher,” Madding said in part.
In addition, Madding said the school was cooperating with law enforcement and was focused on protecting students’ safety.
No details about the student or the allegedly inappropriate relationship have been disclosed, according to WLKY.
