CV NEWS FEED // One in five or fewer Americans are regularly using “woke” language in their everyday conversations.

New post-election polling from YouGov asked American adults to rate the frequency of their use of 30 “woke” terms, including “safe space”, “white privilege”, “trigger warnings”, “body positivity”, and “cultural appropriation”.

According to Semafor, “safe space” was the most-used term, with 20% of Americans reporting its regular use. Broken down by political party, approximately 26% of Democrats said they regularly used the term, while roughly 17% of Republicans said the same.

The poll also found that about 50-60% of the surveyed Americans had generally heard of the more common “woke” terms, like “white privilege” and “gender non-binary” but had never used them. Regarding the lesser-known terms, like “Latinx” or “BIPOC”, significantly fewer respondents said they had heard of or regularly used the terms.

Semafor reported that Taylor Orth, the director of survey data journalism at YouGov, said those who voted for Harris were more likely to use the “woke” terms, but added that “very few Americans say they use them regularly.”

“We also observed some differences in familiarity based on age, education, and race, but within all groups, regular usage of these terms is rare,” she said, according to Semafor.

After “safe space,” Democrats were most likely to favor the term “white privilege” (just over 25%). Republicans were most likely to use the term “woke” (roughly 17%), which Semafor noted is generally used in mockery.

One of the least likely terms to be used by both Democrats and Republicans was “misogynoir”, with roughly 3% of Republicans and 6% of Democrats reporting frequent use. However, Republicans demonstrated similar levels of reluctance (3%) to use terms like “systemic racism”, “cisgender”, “ableism”, and “decolonization”.

Semafor reported that Ohio Rep. Greg Landsman commented on his party’s use of “woke” language in a recent interview.

“Is it language that people use every day, or is it political language?” he asked, according to Semafor. “Is it Twitter language, is it partisan language, is it politician-y language? Or is it the stuff that you hear when you’re talking to people in real life?”
