Portugal and Spain’s 2026 World Cup last-16 tie promises to be a fascinating match-up all over the pitch, but the midfield battle could be one for the ages.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup round of 16 continues with an enticing Iberian derby between Portugal and Spain.
The rivalry is one of international football’s fiercest, and all eyes will be on the Dallas Stadium as the two lock horns again for a spot in the quarter-finals.
There will be plenty of hard-fought battles across the pitch, with Lamine Yamal set to come up against Nuno Mendes, plus Mikel Oyarzabal and Cristiano Ronaldo hoping to outscore each other. But it’s in the middle of the park where the game will really heat up. Portugal vs Spain could be the ultimate battle for the ball.
Spain are known for their love of ball retention and have averaged the highest possession at the World Cup with 68.2%, though Portugal aren’t exactly polar opposites, with their 61.8% the fifth most. Both teams demand control.
It follows that La Roja have played the most passes per match with 631.3; Portugal, again fifth, average 555.8 – a high number, but almost a hundred fewer than their opponents.
When it comes to individuals, both teams boast some of the very best ball-playing midfielders in world football.
Spain and Manchester City star Rodri has averaged 104.1 passes per 90, the most of any player at the tournament, though he is very closely followed by Portugal and Paris Saint-Germain schemer Vitinha (102.7).
The two midfield maestros have been levels above the rest in that regard; Algeria’s Aïssa Mandi (90.8) has made the third-most successful passes per 90 at the 2026 World Cup and is therefore quite a way behind them.
Only one of Rodri and Vitinha can have the ball at any given time, and so the battle for possession and control in this game could be one of the more fascinating watches of the whole tournament.
For both players, their outstanding form at this World Cup has carried on from years of equally impressive domestic campaigns.
Since Rodri’s transfer to Manchester City in 2019, no midfielder has taken more touches (18,778) or played more successful passes (15,164) than the Spaniard in the Premier League.
It’s a similar story for Vitinha in Ligue 1, though his numbers are even more extraordinary.
Since 2022, following his transfer from Porto, Vitinha has completed 1,626 more passes and taken 1,308 more touches than any other player in France’s top flight. Although he made a relatively slow start at PSG, it has been a case of complete and utter domination for him over the past three years or so.
Alongside Rodri in Spain’s midfield, Barcelona’s Pedri has established himself as one of the best in the world at just 23 years old.
Tasked with progressing the ball further up the pitch and connecting play to the likes of Yamal and Oyarzabal, Pedri has completed 122 passes in the final third at the World Cup, the most of any player.
Despite not recording an assist at the tournament yet, his seven chances created and 1.54 expected assists lead the way for Spain.
In La Liga, Pedri ended the 2025-26 season with nine assists and two goals, and he completed the most passes in the opposition’s half (1,412). He was a key component in Barça’s title win.
Pedri and Rodri complement each other perfectly in midfield and are almost impossible to snatch control away from. If any team is going to be able to, though, it’s Portugal.
Even younger than Pedri is João Neves at 21 years old, who, alongside Vitinha, played a big role in PSG’s UEFA Champions League successes over the past two seasons.
During the 2025-26 UCL campaign, Neves had 43 touches in the opposition’s box, the most of any PSG midfielder, and had five goal contributions (two goals, three assists). He also won 91 duels; only Nuno Mendes (97) won more for the Parisians.
He may well find himself tasked with trying to disrupt the Spaniards’ momentum and possession, and any success could be pivotal in any potential Portuguese triumph.
Despite scoring a header on his World Cup debut against DR Congo, Neves has otherwise arguably been unable to truly sink his teeth into this tournament. But a player of his quality can flick a switch at any moment, and there would be better opportunity to do so than a last-16 tie with Spain.
None of this even takes into account the influence of Bruno Fernandes and Dani Olmo, also likely to start as part of their respective midfields. But as talented as they are and as potentially decisive as they could be, it is the battle for control between their teammates that could make this one of the most fascinating contests of the 2026 World Cup.
