CV NEWS FEED // Pro-abortion groups are suing Arizona over the state’s 15-week abortion ban in light of the recently passed state constitutional amendment allowing abortion until viability, about 24 weeks.

Fox News 10 reports that the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), Planned Parenthood, and the Center for Reproductive Rights filed the lawsuit Dec. 3.

An ACLU staff attorney admitted that the new amendment “does not sort of wipe the statute books clean.”

The attorney, Rebecca Chan, added, “Further action is needed in order to take that additional step to effectuate the amendment’s promise. And so that’s really what this 15-week ban challenge is.”

Cathi Herrod, the president of the pro-life organization Center for Arizona Policy, responded to the lawsuit.

“We are hopeful that those laws will continue to stand because government has an interest in enacting laws that protect the health and safety of women,” she said, “many of those pro-life laws do just that.”

After Arizona and several other states passed pro-choice legislation in the November election, Students for Life America (SFLA) president Kristan Hawkins urged Republicans to keep fighting for life, as CatholicVote previously reported

“GOP leadership in those states MUST step up, and we’ve got to get to work changing culture,” Hawkins said. “And don’t worry, I have some creative solutions for how we can massively limit the evil of abortion in those states … stay tuned.”

Hawkins also said, “We need to be ready to fight an (onslaught) of attacks against the pro-life movement until Inauguration Day.”
