(LifeSiteNews) — A Catholic priest who has supported LGBT causes in the Church now says he does not like the word “God” and suggested that His will “is constantly changing” according to each person and each age.

In an August 12 interview with Slovak television personality Adela Vinczeová, Father Adam Štefanec said he avoids the word “God” because it “no longer says anything to anyone,” rejects the traditional greeting “Jesus Christ be praised,” questions the divine nature of Jesus, and seeks language that can be used equally by believers and non-believers.

“I don’t like the word ‘God.’ I’m looking for words for believers and non‑believers,” Štefanec said.

The Slovak priest added that, “if God exists,” there must be some “universal word” that connects all human beings, “not just active churchgoers or believers,” describing one such possibility as the concept of “humanity.”

In the interview, Štefanec, dressed in ordinary clothes rather than clerical garb, said people use the word “God” and the Bible to “defend their own ideas” and “justify all sorts of things,” or otherwise claim to know exactly what “God wants.”

He observed that “often the Scripture, and especially maybe not even as a whole but rather some quotes ripped out of context from that Scripture, are used to defend various things.” This reaches a peak when we see people “invoking God or the Bible in support of war,” he stated. “For me, that is completely unacceptable.”

When asked what it means to live according to what Christ wants, Štefanec answered that “the answer is different for each person and different in every period of history. It is constantly changing.” Continuing, he argued that God’s will is about “being faithful to yourself and living in harmony with yourself,” which he defined as “being authentic, and being human.” He added that there is no need to “give it a Christian label” because, in his view, “if something is good, then it is good, regardless of what label we attach to it.”

The priest also described Jesus primarily in terms of His humanity. In a lengthy passage, he remarked that Jesus, “in my opinion, He was a man, a man, a man,” describing Him as “just like a real human being who walked the earth.” He also argued that Jesus demonstrated “what it means to be a man,” while again hesitating to use the word “God” by interjecting: “Even though I don’t like the word God.”

According to a Christianitas.sk report,  Štefanec appeared in an October 2025 video promoting the LGBT agenda with three other Slovak priests – Fathers Marek Mucha, Miroslav Kocúr , and an additional priest who appears anonymously with a modified voice – alongside Bishop Róbert Bezák, former bishop of the Archdiocese of Trnava.

In the video, they call for greater LGBT acceptance within the Church and openly criticize Catholic teaching, portraying their intervention as an effort to correct what they perceive as the Church’s inadequate approach toward so-called “rainbow Catholics.”
