PSG vs Aston Villa: The Key Stats

Paris Saint-Germain will be out to defend their UEFA Super Cup crown when they meet Aston Villa in Salzburg on Wednesday.
The Red Bull Arena will host the annual fixture between the previous season’s winners of the Champions League and Europa League.
PSG needed late heroics from Lee Kang-in and Gonçalo Ramos to snatch a 2-2 draw against Tottenham in last season’s Super Cup, before winning 4-3 on penalties in Udine.
Luis Enrique’s side now have the chance to become just the fourth team to retain this trophy, looking to emulate the feats of Ajax (1973, 1974), AC Milan (1989, 1990) and Real Madrid (2016, 2017).
The PSG boss has pedigree in this competition, winning both of his two matches after last year’s victory over Spurs. Luis Enrique also oversaw a 5-4 victory for Barcelona over Unai Emery’s Sevilla in 2015, which is still the highest-scoring Super Cup match to date.
Having edged past Arsenal on penalties to defend their Champions League crown last term, PSG will head into this one as hot favourites, considering their remarkable depth at both ends of the pitch.
They have scored in their last 28 matches across all competitions since a 1-0 loss to Paris FC in January. That marks PSG’s longest scoring streak since a 36-game run between September 2019 and July 2020.
Villa will expect to put up a good fight, but history is not on their side. The Europa League holders have won this trophy in just one of the last 13 seasons, with Atlético Madrid beating Real Madrid 4-2 in 2018.
Villa, too, ended the 2025-26 campaign in decent form. After three consecutive defeats across April and May, Emery’s side won four of their last five matches in 2025-26 (D1) netting at least twice in each game.
That winning run includes their convincing Europa League final victory over Freiburg. Emiliano Buendía was on target, though their other two scorers – Youri Tielemans and Morgan Rogers – have since left for Manchester United and Chelsea respectively.
This one could also go the distance, considering five of the last six Super Cup matches involving an English side have been decided with a penalty shootout. Each of the last four have been decided that way, with the only exception in this run when Real Madrid beat Man Utd 2-1 in 2017.
However, Emery doesn’t have fond memories of the Super Cup. He missed out on silverware with Sevilla against Real Madrid and Barcelona in 2014 and 2015 respectively, then lost on penalties to Chelsea with Villarreal in 2021.
Wednesday should also offer Emery the chance to test out his new signings. Johan Manzambi, João Gomes and loanee Alejandro Garnacho may all expect to test themselves against the back-to-back European champions.
PSG’s scorers in last season’s Super Cup, Lee and Ramos, have since left for Atlético and Milan, but Maghnes Akliouche’s arrival from Monaco may excite PSG supporters ahead of this one.
PSG vs Aston Villa Head-to-Head
This will be just the third meeting between PSG and Villa after they met across two legs in the 2024-25 Champions League quarter-finals.
PSG won 3-1 at home in the last eight before progressing 5-4 on aggregate, despite a 3-2 loss at Villa Park.
This outing will mark only Villa’s second Super Cup appearance – they previously beat Barcelona 3-1 on aggregate as reigning European Cup champions in 1983 (0-1 away, 3-0 home).
PSG are set to appear in their third Super Cup match, losing 9-2 on aggregate to Juventus in 1997 before the penalty shootout win over Spurs last year.
PSG vs Aston Villa Prediction
The Opta supercomputer backed PSG to come out on top – they won in 90 minutes across 45% of 10,000 pre-match simulations.
Villa were afforded a 29.6% chance of victory in normal time, while the draw – and extra time, plus possible penalties – came in at 25.5%.
