Publix frozen blueberries recalled by FDA now issued highest risk warning due to E. coli strain

Those enjoying frozen blueberries as a treat to stay cool this summer may want to check their freezer since the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has released one of its highest warnings.

The FDA has issued a Class I risk classification for four different GreenWise frozen blueberry products, which were sold at Publix stores in eight different states before they were recalled after being linked to a recent E. coli outbreak.

The Class I risk classification is described by the FDA as, “a situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of, or exposure to, a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.”

The products were shipped to Publix stores in eight states – Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.

Anyone who has purchased the following four products are recommended not to consume them, and to either throw them away or return them to Publix for a full refund.

The recall was first initiated back on July 3, when Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A. from San Carlos, Chile issued a recall of a single 10-oz. lot of frozen blueberries.

The recall was expanded on July 29 because they were linked to a strain of E. coli (E. coli O145), which can cause severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, and vomiting.

While many healthy individuals who contract E. coli can recover within a week, there can be other complications for younger children, older adults or those with weakened immune systems.

Some E. coli infections could lead to a serious condition known as hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), which can lead to permanent kidney failure or even death, according to the CDC.

The FDA revealed on July 30 that the outbreak lead to 12 illnesses in Florida and Georgia and four hospitalizations, though no deaths have been recorded at this time.

The FDA also addressed concerns over other products from Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A., though they have not been released in America
