A rural Labour MP has broken ranks with Sir Keir Starmer to demand the Prime Minister takes urgent action on the controversial inheritance tax raid on British farmers.

Henry Tufnell is one of three Labour MPs to have called for the Prime Minister to rethink plans to force more farms to pay 20 per cent inheritance tax on estates worth over £1million.

The Times revealed that 40 Labour MPs have written to the Chancellor Rachel Reeves to protest about the changes and were reportedly due to meet with Treasury Ministers today.

Tufnell, who was elected as the Labour MP for Mid & South Pembrokeshire last July, told today's Chopper's Political podcast that having a rethink on the plans is a "a fantastic opportunity for Labour, who've won a huge amount of rural seats, to come in and reset that relationship".

"I've engaged... I was elected by them to come to Westminster to stand up for them. And I'm standing by them now."

Despite defending farmers against Starmer's tax raid, Tufnell hit the headlines last year after it was revealed his family had transferred valuable farmland just weeks before the changes were introduced.

Tufnell's parents, Mark and Jane, handed over around 890 hectares of their Calmsden estate in the Cotswolds to another one of their sons.

Responding to reports at the time, Tufnell told The Daily Mail: "I appreciate that it looks bad, but there's nothing that I can do about it.

"I guess the point is that your family is your family, and dad has taken tax advice and spoken to financial advisers and has started succession planning. But it's not because of something I told him."

The row around the so-called tractor tax continues to rage on across rural parts of the UK, with farmers descending on Westminster on Shrove Tuesday in another display of disaffection.

Farmers remained defiant during the rally, declaring: “We won’t back down.”

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage and Tory leader Kemi Badenoch joined farmers in Westminster to support farmers.
