Russian President Vladimir Putin met top Chinese diplomat Wang Yi in Moscow on Tuesday, telling him that he was “looking forward” to welcoming Chinese President Xi Jinping in May.

A “rich and well-prepared” programme awaited Xi during his visit on the occasion of Russia’s “Victory Day”, Putin said.

“It is going to be an official visit … He’s going to be our main guest of honour and we will have a chance to speak about the current state of our bilateral relations and also to discuss our cooperation on multilateral platforms.”

Wang told the Russian leader that preparations were under way for Xi’s trip, which would give a fresh impetus to the development of ties, Russian news agency RIA Novosti reported.

“Cooperation between Russia and China is never directed against any third parties, and it does not tolerate any interference from the outside,” Wang added.

Wang’s visit to Moscow comes amid growing speculation that the recent thaw in Russia-US relations may signal Washington’s efforts to drive a wedge between Moscow and Beijing.
