A bullfight in Colombia spiraled out control when the beast launched itself into unsuspecting spectators — sending screaming fans fleeing for their lives and injuring four.
The happy crowd had gathered in the Castilla district of Coyaima, Tolima, to celebrate a July 20 festival — a tradition where the animal is released into the ring and members of the public are encouraged to poke and tease the enraged bovine.
Big mistake.
Without warning, the big brute sprinted along the edge of the arena — then launched its massive, 2,000-pound physique into the stands, which was captured on frightening video.
The monster then charged directly at terrified fans.
Some tried to wildly flee the stadium, while others desperately leapt into the now-deserted ring to avoid being gored by the behemoth.
One woman was trampled in the stands. Three others got a taste of the brute’s savage fury and suffered injuries.
The four wounded fans were quickly treated by emergency services and transported to nearby medical centers, while the bull was finally subdued and led away.
Afterwards, Ricardo Suárez, Tolima’s Secretary of the Interior, went on his own rampage.
“The bull jumped towards the barrier where spectators were standing and attacked some of them,” he fumed to local media. “We must move towards new forms of entertainment and new spectacles that genuinely enrich Tolima’s culture.
“This proves that such barbarity is neither culture nor bravery. Bullfighting must end in Tolima. It is a grotesque practice that contributes nothing to society.”
Each year, approximately 180,000 bulls are killed in bullfights around the world, according to the Humane World for Animals, with many more killed or injured during bull fiesta events.
“Advocates of bullfighting argue that if the matador aims correctly, the animal dies in a matter of seconds,” the group says on their website.
“This type of quick, clean death, however, is not the norm. In most cases, the matador misses the target, injuring the bull’s lungs and bronchial tubes, causing blood to flow and bubble through the animal’s mouth and nose.”
