The Democratic Party is without a leader, though there are a few leftists on Capitol Hill who appear desperate to take up the mantle.
Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) has gotten a social media glow up – and started being floated as a potential replacement for Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) – since he began dating a millennial Dem strategist. Speaking of Schumer, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) is being encouraged to primary him in 2028 as she embarks on her “Fight Oligarchy” tour with Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT).
And then there is Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) who is also positioning herself as a new mouthpiece of progressive left with her fiery and performative media appearances and hot takes. Her latest? Mockingly calling Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, who uses a wheelchair, “governor Hot Wheels” during a pro-LGBTQ fundraiser over the weekend.
On Tuesday’s show, Megyn was joined by the hosts of America This Week, Walter Kirn and Matt Taibbi, to discuss Crockett’s remarks and why the Democratic Party lacks any and all credibility.
Crockett’s Comment
Crockett has made headlines in recent weeks for calling for Elon Musk to be “taken down” and for Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) to be “knocked over the head, like hard.” But it was her comment about Abbott, whose legs were paralyzed in a freak running accident in 1984, at a benefit for the Human Rights Campaign in Los Angeles that was particularly stunning for a self-identified “progressive.”
House Dems' top spox Jasmine Crockett applauded after attacking Texas Governor Abbott for using a wheelchair:
"Y'all know we got Governor Hot Wheels down there!"

“We in these hot a– Texas streets, honey. Y’all know we got Governor Hot Wheels down there, come on now,” she laughingly told the crowd. “And the only thing hot about him is that he is a hot a– mess, honey!”
Megyn said the “Hot Wheels” crack definitely doesn’t seem like it should fly with the ‘woke’ left, but alas. “I gotta check my ‘woke’ rulebook, but… I do not think you can refer to the guy who is in a wheelchair… as ‘governor Hot Wheels.’ Some of her defenders online are like, ‘We all call him that down here.’ As far as I can tell, it is only nasty leftists who do and I am not sure that gives you a pass.”
Democrat ‘Cosplaying’
Like Kamala Harris who was criticized on the campaign trail for adjusting her accent to the crowd she was addressing, Kirn noted that Crockett’s affect is not consistent. To that point, video has circulated of how the congresswoman sounded just a couple of years ago compared to how she talks now and the contrast is stark.
Much like AOC, who was Sandy Cortez from the leafy New York City suburb of Yorktown Heights until she ran for Congress, Crockett is not being honest about her background. Megyn pointed to a tweet from her former Fox News colleague Todd Starnes that summed up the inconsistencies.
“Jasmine Crockett wants you to think she’s from the hood – that she grew up on the streets. The exact opposite is true,” he posted on X. “She attended an exclusive day school where tuition is nearly $35,000 per year. She also attended Rhodes College, a private school where tuition is nearly $55,000 per year. She’s cosplaying a gangsta.”
Kirn said “cosplaying” is now commonplace on the left. “I was at the RFK Jr. confirmation hearing, and there was Bernie [Sanders] playing the socialist; there was Elizabeth Warren playing the puritanical school,” he noted. “It was like a band that had been put together by a casting agent. They have a person who represents each part of their constituency, and they play the role.”
Attention Grabber
Taibbi said he experienced this firsthand when he testified at a House Judiciary Committee earlier this year. “The full committee hearings are quite long…. and they let the most junior members ask questions last, so I had to sit for quite a long time,” he recalled. “At the very end, Jasmine Crockett, who I’d never heard of before, suddenly started screaming at me and Michael Shellenberger.”
He said he was forced to pay attention because “you never know when you are going to be asked an actual question and allowed to speak,” but it was impossible to follow. “I couldn’t understand what she was saying because she was moving from one thing to another and was doing all that code switching stuff with the ‘y’all lie,'” Taibbi continued. “There was not even a pretense of addressing any of the issues that we were there to talk about, like digital censorship… She probably had no idea that I was a lifetime Democrat… That is just what she does… and that is how she fundraises.”
Ultimately, Kirn said Dems like Crockett have one goal, and they are – at least on some level – achieving it. “What they are doing… is condescending, it is thespian, it is pure acting,” he concluded. “They are trying to get headlines and clicks for these otherwise ridiculous insults, but she got on The Megyn Kelly Show. Being a rising star in the Democratic Party means getting increasing attention for increasingly absurd statements.”
