Multiple construction projects on the White House grounds have reportedly soared to at least $900 million.
The Washington Post reported on the higher-than-expected costs Wednesday, stating that the price tag, previously estimated at approximately $600 million, will largely be covered by taxpayers.
Rather than securing money directly from Congress, the administration appears to have gathered funding from private donations as well as executive branch funds, and is reportedly holding the funds in a little-known account typically used to hold smaller amounts of money reserved for modest maintenance, according to AP.
The planning documents and price tag represent the most significant and costly overhaul of the White House in more than 80 years, as it inches toward one billion.

Confidential contracts and money dedicated to Trump’s construction plans are reportedly being routed through the Executive Residence.
Usual protocols involve the submission of budget requests for major changes to the White House being sent to Congress for approval.
The Trump administration has not disclosed the total cost of their construction plans, but Trump has asserted that the work to be done for the East Wing ballroom project will be covered by private donations.

The White House is funneling millions into executive maintenance accounts without oversight or approval from Congress, The Washington Post reports.
A federal appeals court ruled August 6 that the Trump administration required congressional approval to continue its plans in the East Wing ballroom.
They were met with Trump’s vow to appeal the ruling, according to AP.
“Congress has exclusive authority to regulate the construction and demolition of White House structures,” U.S. Circuit Court Judges Patricia A. Millett and Bradley N. Garcia wrote in the accompanying opinion, according to AP.

The AP reported that the costs could swell beyond $927 million.
White House spokesperson Davis Ingle said, “Thanks to the Builder-in-Chief, the White House will be properly glorified and remain in excellent condition for generations to come,” according to AP.
The Daily Caller reached out to the White House for comment but has not heard back as of publication.
