Former President Trump shocked and appalled some Republican lawmakers on Wednesday by announcing plans to nominate Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) for attorney general.
Why it matters: Republican reaction to even Trump's most controversial nominations has been muted so far, but placing the scandal-prone right-winger in the nation's highest law enforcement role is a step too far for many.
We wanted him out of the House ... this isn't what we were thinking," quipped one House Republican, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to speak frankly about Trump's decision.
What we're hearing: Trump's announcement was met with audible gasps by House Republicans during a conference meeting on Wednesday afternoon, multiple sources in the room told Axios.

Collins already a no. Murkowski sure to be. Tillis says it will be an “uphill struggle” to get to 50. Kevin McCarthy would likely show up as a witness against him. This confirmation ‘aint happening.

If the Rinos were wise they’d be delighted to get Gaetz’s vote out the House. He caused them more pain than any other member.

President Trump will get Matt through confirmation.

I've said this in other threads, but we badly need an AG who will be confirmed on Day 1 of the Trump Administration, and who can begin dismantling the Biden DOJ immediately.
Gaetz ain't it.

Kevin can show up as a witness but his deeds can then ne exposed as well. I think Kevin does not want that to happen.

I agree, especially with other strong MAGA choices available. But DJT is the one who makes those decisions.

Gaetz is an excellent lawyer. The only people against him seem to be folks who get along great with the Mullahs.

Agreed, but WHO?? I can't think of another person. Jeff Sessions was supposed to be the PERFECT A.G., and he was a complete disaster, essentially derailing half of Trump's first term. This is by far the most important of all Cabinet picks.

So are some FReepers...I’m loving it!
All I’ve heard for the 4 years Trump was in office is bitching and moaning about why doesn’t he fire so-and-so, why doesn’t he change such-and-such, so-and-so is a traitor, disloyal, assistant-democrat, RINO, etc ad nauseum.
Well now he’s DOING IT and they can’t seem to stop bitching and moaning and second-guessing him at every turn.
Trump should quote the words of Barack Hussein Obama: “I won”. Or if they prefer: “STFU”.

Gaetz is the avowed enemy of “anonymous” RINO’s like this one. He calls them out frequently.

"Stunned?" Perhaps. "Disgusted?" That's just Axios hyperbole.
