Resident Evil Requiem’s producer revealed that the devs behind Capcom’s zombie-slaying series have thought about setting a game in Japan.

From the terrifying town of Silent Hill f, sword-swinging action of Ghost of Yotei, to the breathtaking races of Forza Horizon 6, Japan has certainly proven to be an incredibly popular setting over the past couple of years.

Hell, we even have another samurai epic in the form of Onimusha: Way of the Sword, which is rumored to be showcased at this week’s State of Play. So, it seems fair to say that there’s been a bit of a Japan renaissance going on in gaming at the moment.

However, Resident Evil has yet to punch its plane ticket to the Land of the Rising Sun, but it’s certainly something Resi Requeim producer Masato Kumazawa has seriously considered.

Resi devs have considered setting game in Japan

Despite being produced in Japan, the Resi series, just like Silent Hill (well, until Silent Hill f came along), has predominantly focused on Western countries and European-style settings.

Capcom has on occasion ventured away from familiar territory, when Resident Evil 5 took us to Africa, and the sixth installment briefly visited Eastern China. Even so, Leon and his zombie-slaying survivors have never been to Japan, but this fact hasn’t been lost on the devs.

“I think Japan is a setting that every Japanese Resident Evil fan has imagined at some point, and I’ve certainly thought about it myself,” said Kumazawa in an interview with Japanese publication Futaman.

“Since the series is primarily developed by staff based in Japan, I’d imagine every member of the development team has considered it at one point or another,” he continued before revealing that it could be in the pipeline for a future game.

“In reality, Japan has never been used as the main setting for a game in the series so far, but perhaps it could appear somewhere in the future.”

While this doesn’t confirm that the next Resident Evil game will be set in Japan, it’s certainly exciting to hear that the producers may take a leaf out of Silent Hill’s horror book, and bring a zombie outbreak to the streets of Tokyo.
