Rio de Janeiro Daily Brief for Wednesday, June 10, 2026

By The Rio Times | Created at 2026-06-10 10:27:07 | Updated at 2026-06-11 15:08:30 1 day ago

Wednesday June 10 is the last full day before the World Cup — and Rio couldn’t have scripted it better. 25°C and 10% rain, the full city open, and a day to use slowly before everything accelerates tomorrow.

The full Centro circuit is open today — CCBB, MAR, MAM Rio and Museu do Amanhã all running. Tomorrow CCBB closes for its Tuesday slot correction — but today everything lines up.

The Ibovespa bounced yesterday — +0.68% to 169,813 points, banking stocks leading, after Trump suggested an Iran deal was within reach and oil prices pulled back. The dollar eased slightly to R$5.18.

Tomorrow: World Cup opens — Mexico vs South Africa, Azteca, Mexico City, 4 pm BRT. Saturday: Brazil vs Morocco, MetLife Stadium, NJ, 7 pm BRT. Friday clears to 25°C / 10% — the best day to be outside before the big match.

03What to See & DoCULTURE

TODAY’S PICK — FULL CENTRO CIRCUIT — PRAÇA MAUÁ / CENTRO

The one day all four Centro museums run together — CCBB, MAR, MAM Rio and Museu do Amanhã

Today is one of the rare Wednesdays where everything lines up: the CCBB is open (it closes Thursdays), MAR is open, MAM Rio is open and Museu do Amanhã is open — all four major Centro institutions running simultaneously. That won’t happen again until next week, and with the World Cup starting tomorrow and a rainy Thursday ahead, today is the day to actually do this properly.

The natural arc: start at the CCBB at R. Primeiro de Março 66 (free, 9 am–8 pm, Yoshitaka Amano retrospective Além da Fantasia through July 7), walk the restored port promenade past the Museu do Amanhã at Praça Mauá 1 (R$30, 9 am–6 pm) and into MAR at Praça Mauá 5 (R$20, 10 am–5 pm, No Martins Sortilégios de desvio). The walk between all three takes about ten minutes; allow two to three hours for the museums themselves, then lunch at Confeitaria Colombo on R. Gonçalves Dias, which is five minutes from the CCBB and has been doing the post-gallery lunch for well over a century.

MAM Rio at Av. Infante Dom Henrique 85, Flamengo, is the afternoon add-on if you’re up for it — the Oiticica and Valentim double bill, R$14, open 11 am–7 pm. CCBB Rio · free · 9 am–8 pm · R. Primeiro de Março 66.

OUTDOORS — BEACHES / LAGOA / PÃO DE AÇÚCAR

25°C on a Wednesday — the beach before the rain, or the Lagoa before the crowd

Wednesday at 25°C and 10% rain is a genuine beach day — and a mid-week Wednesday beach in Rio is one of the city’s quiet pleasures. Ipanema and Leblon are far less crowded than any weekend day; the water temperature after the recent heat is warm; and the Corcovado is sharp above the hills in today’s visibility. Posto 9 at Ipanema remains the reference point.

The Lagoa circuit is also excellent — at 25°C on a clear Wednesday the kiosks are open, the hills reflected in the water and the circuit walkable at any pace. The Pão de Açúcar at Av. Pasteur 520 (8 am–9 pm, R$185/R$92 meia) is at its best in this visibility: the bay stretches north to Niterói and the islands are clear from the summit.

Parque Lage at R. Jardim Botânico 414 is free and always worth it on a clear day — the Escola de Artes Visuais café in the Italianate villa courtyard is one of those places that never loses its charm. The Jardim Botânico at R. Jardim Botânico 1008 is R$30, 8 am–5 pm.

COFFEE & WHERE TO WORK — BOTAFOGO / IPANEMA / CENTRO

The last productive workday before the World Cup — coffee and coworking while the city is still focused

Wednesday is arguably the last day this week where serious work gets done in Rio. From tomorrow, the World Cup takes over the city’s bandwidth; meetings that can move to Thursday will move, and the office energy shifts. If you have something to close, today is the day. Urban Bean in Botafogo is the most reliable choice for a focused morning session — good Wi-Fi, outdoor tables at 25°C and a clientele that actually comes to work.

Aussie Coffee at the passage off R. Visconde de Pirajá in Ipanema is the post-beach option — close enough to walk from the water. Empório Jardim in Jardim Botânico rounds out the neighbourhood circuit, quieter and better suited for the afternoon.

For coworking: WeWork Porto Maravilha runs the full Wednesday schedule at the port. Como Coworking in Botafogo is the neighbourhood alternative with day passes. Curto Café in Centro is a good pre-circuit warm-up if you’re heading to the CCBB and MAR afterward.

THE CONTRASTING PLAY — CORCOVADO / SANTA TERESA

Cristo Redentor in this visibility — or a slow morning in Santa Teresa before the World Cup pace begins

At 25°C and 10% rain, today is one of the best visibility days for the Cristo Redentor since the series started — the train from Cosme Velho takes 20 minutes and the statue from the terrace, with the city and the bay below, is worth every real. Tickets from R$150; book online at www.tremdocorcovado.rio and go early to beat the afternoon cloud that builds most days.

The slower alternative is Santa Teresa — the Escadaria Selarón (free, Rua Joaquim Silva), the walk up to Largo do Guimarães, a coffee at one of the neighbourhood cafés and the Parque das Ruínas terrace at R. Murtinho Nobre 169 (free, Tue–Sun 8 am–5 pm) for the Centro panorama. A Santa Teresa morning before the World Cup takes over is a very particular kind of pleasure.

TONIGHT, AFTER 7 PM

The night before the World Cup — Lapa, Botafogo bars and the quiet before tomorrow’s noise

There’s something charged about the night before a World Cup — Rio’s bars fill earlier than usual, the city is expectant, and almost every conversation lands on football. Carioca da Gema at R. Mem de Sá 79, Lapa, runs the Wednesday samba from 8 pm, R$45–55, at its mid-week best. Rio Scenarium at R. do Lavradio 20 runs the full Wednesday programme from 7:30 pm, R$50–60 — the three-storey antiques-house room is exactly the right backdrop for the night before the tournament opens.

Bar Urca at R. Cândido Gaffrée 205, the seawall terrace at 25°C and sunset around 5:30 pm — a perfect pre-dinner spot before Lapa. Blue Note Rio at Av. Borges de Medeiros 1424, Lagoa, runs the Wednesday headline from 8 pm, R$80–100.

Note: Pedda do Sal does not run Wednesdays — its three weekly nights are Tuesday, Friday and Sunday. The next Pedra do Sal is Friday June 12 from 8 pm at Largo João da Baiana, Saúde — the evening before Brazil vs Morocco day, and one of the better Pedra do Sal nights of the year.

ALSO ON TODAY

CCBB Rio — Amano Além da Fantasia, free, 9 am–8 pm, R. Primeiro de Março 66.

MAR — No Martins Sortilégios de desvio, R$20, 10 am–5 pm, Praça Mauá 5.

Museu do Amanhã — R$30, 9 am–6 pm, Praça Mauá 1.

MAM Rio — Oiticica + Valentim, R$14, 11 am–7 pm, Av. Infante Dom Henrique 85.

Pão de Açúcar — R$185 / R$92 meia, 8 am–9 pm, Av. Pasteur 520, Urca.

Jardim Botânico — R$30, 8 am–5 pm, R. Jardim Botânico 1008.

Tomorrow Thursday: CCBB closed. 45% rain. World Cup opens 4 pm BRT. Book your bar spot early.

04Getting AroundTRANSPORT

WEDNESDAY JUNE 10

Rodízio is not in force in Rio. MetrôRio on the standard Wednesday timetable, Linhas 1, 2 and 4. The VLT Carioca and Praça XV ferry on standard weekday service. Santos Dumont (SDU) on standard Wednesday domestic timetable.

No event-specific transport today. Thursday’s 45% rain and the World Cup opening will affect bar and venue access from the afternoon — if you’re planning to watch tomorrow from a specific spot, travel earlier than usual. The MetrôRio typically extends service on big match days; expect full confirmation in tomorrow’s brief.

05Where to EatFOOD

WEDNESDAY — PRE-WORLD CUP LUNCH AND DINNER

Post-circuit lunch: Confeitaria Colombo at R. Gonçalves Dias 32, R$78, five minutes from the CCBB — the belle-époque room and a proper sit-down lunch before the afternoon. Bar Urca at R. Cândido Gaffrée 205 for the bay terrace in the afternoon sun, after MAM Rio.

Wednesday dinner: Lasai (Rafa Costa e Silva, R$420) at R. Relator Laurindo 7, Botafogo, open Wednesdays — the pre-World Cup dinner if you want to do it properly. Aprazível at R. Aprazível 62, Santa Teresa, from noon. Nova Capela at Av. Mem de Sá 96, Lapa, the late standard, open until 4 am.

06Practical InfoESSENTIALS

WEDNESDAY JUNE 10

Banks on standard Wednesday hours (10 am–4 pm). B3 trading — third session of the week. PIX and all services running normally. No public holidays or special closures today.

Shopping centres on standard Wednesday hours, typically 10 am–10 pm. Nomad note: the last fully productive workday before the World Cup disruption. If you’re working Thursday, expect less than full focus from colleagues — Rio doesn’t pretend otherwise on a World Cup opening day. Wi-Fi at Urban Bean and Como Coworking reliable today.

07Community & LifestyleEXPAT LIFE

There is a particular quality to Rio on the day before a World Cup — a city that already lives at a certain pitch simply raises it a notch. The Aliança Francesa at R. Muniz Barreto 730, Botafogo, runs its Wednesday programme; the American Society of Rio de Janeiro and the RJ Athletic Club are both organising Brazil vs Morocco viewing events for Saturday — ask at the desk today if you’re interested in joining.

For new arrivals: the Brazil vs Morocco match on Saturday at 7 pm BRT is the cultural centrepiece of the next ten days. Every bar in Rio — from the simplest botequim in Madureira to the rooftop at Blue Note — will carry it. Planning where to watch is worth doing today, while tables are still available.

08Game DaySPORT

WORLD CUP TOMORROW — BRAZIL SATURDAY

One day to go — Mexico vs South Africa opens the tournament, then Rio waits for Saturday

No matches today. The World Cup opens tomorrow Thursday June 11 with Mexico vs South Africa at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, 4 pm BRT — the first game of the 48-team tournament. Brazil beat Egypt 2–1 in their final warmup on Saturday; Neymar’s calf injury means his availability for Morocco is still not confirmed.

Group C in full: Morocco on June 13 at MetLife Stadium, NJ, 7 pm BRT — Haiti on June 19 in Philadelphia, 9:30 pm BRT — Scotland on June 24 in Miami, 7 pm BRT. If Brazil finish first in the group, the round-of-16 is June 29 in Houston. The final is July 19 at MetLife Stadium.

09Business & MarketsFINANCE

The Ibovespa recovered on Tuesday — +0.68% to 169,813 points, with banking stocks leading after Trump suggested an Iran deal was getting close, which pulled oil prices back and gave some breathing room to risk assets. Volume was R$25.19 billion. The YTD is now at +5.39% and the month-to-date at -2.29%.

The dollar closed at R$5.1785 (-0.05%) — technically a small real gain, but the currency remained volatile all day as Trump’s afternoon comments pushed it back toward flat. The broader picture hasn’t changed: the real is under structural pressure from the Fed rate path, the fiscal outlook and the Iran situation, all three of which remain unresolved.

The Selic is at 14.75%; the Copom on June 17–18 is the key event of the month. Between now and then, the World Cup opening is expected to compress short-term volatility slightly — which markets have historically welcomed as a brief calm before the next data point.

11Frequently Asked QuestionsFAQ

Which museums are open in Rio today, and why does Wednesday matter?

All four major Centro institutions run on Wednesdays: the CCBB (free, 9 am–8 pm, R. Primeiro de Março 66), MAR (R$20, 10 am–5 pm, Praça Mauá 5), Museu do Amanhã (R$30, 9 am–6 pm, Praça Mauá 1) and MAM Rio (R$14, 11 am–7 pm, Av. Infante Dom Henrique 85). Tomorrow CCBB closes for its Thursday slot.

Wednesday is also the last calm cultural day before the World Cup changes the city’s rhythm through late July. If you’ve been meaning to do the Praça Mauá arc — Museu do Amanhã to MAR to CCBB — today is the day.

What happened at the Ibovespa yesterday and what moved the market?

The Ibovespa rose 0.68% to 169,813 points on Tuesday, with banking stocks leading the recovery. The trigger was Trump suggesting that an Iran deal was “close” — that was enough to pull oil prices back and give risk assets some room to breathe after three days of selling.

The dollar closed near flat at R$5.18. The recovery doesn’t change the underlying picture — the Ibovespa still needs to reclaim 170,000 points with conviction, and the Iran situation remains the single most important variable for Brazil’s market in the short term.

What time does the World Cup open tomorrow and what is Brazil’s schedule?

The World Cup opens tomorrow Thursday June 11 with Mexico vs South Africa at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, 4 pm BRT — live on Globo (free-to-air), SporTV and GE TV. Note that tomorrow brings 45% rain in Rio; book your viewing spot early.

Brazil’s Group C: Morocco on June 13 at MetLife Stadium, NJ, 7 pm BRT — Haiti on June 19 in Philadelphia, 9:30 pm BRT — Scotland on June 24 in Miami, 7 pm BRT. Saturday’s weather in Rio is 25°C and 20% rain — very good conditions for a neighbourhood bar evening.

Where should I watch the World Cup in Rio — both the opening and the Brazil matches?

Thursday opening (45% rain — go indoor): Carioca da Gema at R. Mem de Sá 79, Lapa, and Bar do Mineiro at R. Paschoal Carlos Magno 99, Santa Teresa, are both reliable. The Copacabana beachfront kiosks will screen it too if the rain allows.

Brazil vs Morocco Saturday (7 pm BRT, 25°C / 20% rain): Blue Note Rio at Av. Borges de Medeiros 1424 for the Lagoa rooftop; Bar Urca at R. Cândido Gaffrée 205 for the seawall; Garota de Ipanema at R. Vinícius de Moraes 49. Book today — Saturday Brazil tables are gone by Friday morning.
