TODAY’S PICK — THE RIO DERBY
Botafogo v Fluminense at the Nilton Santos, Plus a Centro Art Trail
Botafogo host Fluminense at the Estádio Nilton Santos in Engenho de Dentro tonight at 9 pm BRT, the headline match of round 22. It is the only fixture involving a big Rio club today, and it is the one the city will be watching.
If you are not going to the ground, the sensible plan is a bar with sound rather than a screen in a corner. Boteco Belmonte at Rua Teixeira de Melo 53 in Ipanema shows every Brasileirão fixture and takes table bookings from lunchtime, which is worth doing for a derby.
Before kick-off, spend the cooler end of the afternoon on a compact Centro museum loop. The Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil opens Wednesday to Monday, 9 am to 8 pm, with free admission. Three minutes away, the Paço Imperial at Praça XV de Novembro 48 opens Tuesday to Sunday, 12 pm to 6 pm, also free. Both sit on the Praça XV VLT stop and pair naturally.
OUTDOORS — EARLY, NOT MIDDAY
Jardim Botânico and Parque Lage Before the Heat
The Jardim Botânico opens Tuesday to Sunday from 8 am to 5 pm, with a late noon opening on Mondays. Entry is R$40 for people resident in Brazil and R$80 for foreign visitors, with a R$20 half-price band. On a 35°C day the avenue of imperial palms is a morning proposition, not an afternoon one.
Adjacent Parque Lage opens 8 am to 5 pm daily and is free. Coffee in the courtyard of the mansion is the shadiest seat in the Zona Sul, and the short trail towards the base of Corcovado is manageable early. Leave it alone after about 11 am today.
COFFEE & WHERE TO WORK — CENTRO
Curto Café, and a Realistic Word on Weekend Desks
Curto Café at Rua da Assembleia 10 in Centro serves single-origin Brazilian coffee with a long communal table and reliable WiFi. Note the Saturday hours: 9 am to 1:30 pm, so this is a morning stop, not an afternoon one.
Be realistic about weekend coworking in Rio. Most dedicated spaces in Flamengo, Botafogo and Centro are staffed Monday to Friday and sell weekend access to members only, so a drop-in desk on a Saturday afternoon is the exception rather than the rule. If you need to work today, a café or a hotel lobby is the dependable answer — and confirm by phone before you travel across town.
THE CONTRASTING PLAY — PORT MUSEUMS
Museu do Amanhã and MAR, Indoors and Air-Conditioned
For a climate-controlled afternoon, the Museu do Amanhã on Praça Mauá opens Thursday to Tuesday, 10 am to 6 pm, with last entry at 5 pm and closed Wednesdays. Tickets are R$30 full and R$15 half. Its future-themed galleries hold a solo visitor easily and work well with children.
The Museu de Arte do Rio next door keeps the same closed day but different hours: Thursday to Tuesday, 11 am to 6 pm, last entry 5 pm, R$20 full and R$10 half, free on Tuesdays. The rooftop terrace looks straight over the port and is a good late-afternoon seat once the sun is off it.
TONIGHT, AFTER 7 PM
The Derby First, Then Lapa
Kick-off is 9 pm, so an early dinner and a late night is the shape of it. Lapa is the obvious base afterwards: the bars under the Arcos run well past midnight on a Saturday and the crowd is at its densest between 11 pm and 2 am.
Carioca da Gema at Av. Mem de Sá 79 runs from 9 pm to 3 am on Saturdays with live samba de raiz — check the cover on the door, as it varies by act. For a quieter option, Bar do Gomez in Santa Teresa, properly the Armazém São Thiago at Rua Áurea 26, is open Monday to Saturday from noon to 1 am and remains the neighbourhood’s beer-and-cachaça institution.
Late hunger is handled at Casa Momus, Rua do Lavradio 11, open Thursday to Saturday from 11:30 am to 2 am. One practical note: the Santa Teresa tram runs in daylight only — the Dois Irmãos line operates 9 am to 5 pm at weekends from Estação Carioca — so plan a ride-hail for the hill after dark.

Getting Around
TRANSPORT
Metrô lines 1, 2 and 4 run a Saturday schedule from 5 am to midnight, and 7 am to 11 pm on Sundays and holidays. The single-journey fare is R$7.90 — the regulator approved a rise to R$8.20 in April, but a state decree has held the fare where it is. A contactless card or a Giro pass saves you the machine queue at the busy interchanges.
The VLT light rail runs roughly 6 am to midnight every day, with longer gaps between trains at weekends. For the derby, Engenho de Dentro is on the SuperVia line rather than the Metrô, and ride-hail surge around the ground is steep in the half-hour after the final whistle — walking ten minutes away from the stadium before you book is the cheap trick.

Where to Eat
LUNCH & DINNER
Lunch: Cais do Oriente at Rua Visconde de Itaboraí 8 in Centro serves a Saturday feijoada in a restored 19th-century warehouse a few minutes from Praça XV, which puts you within walking distance of both museums above. It is a sit-down lunch rather than a quick one, so allow a couple of hours.
Dinner: Bar do David in Chapéu Mangueira, above Leme, is the award-winning boteco worth the trip — note it is in Leme, not Santa Teresa, as some listings claim. In Lapa, the Rua do Lavradio strip stays open past midnight; Casa Momus at number 11 runs to 2 am on a Saturday. Most places take cards, but keep R$100 in small notes for the street bars.

Practical Info
GOOD TO KNOW
Today is a heat day, not a jacket day. The minimum is 17°C overnight but the maximum is 35°C, and the north-westerly makes the Centro streets feel closer than the number suggests. Drink more water than you think you need, and treat 11 am to 3 pm as indoor time.
Book the Jardim Botânico online through the official site to skip the Saturday-morning queue. Museu do Amanhã and MAR both stop admitting at 5 pm, so a 4:30 pm arrival is cutting it fine.
For the derby, leave the passport in the safe and carry a photo of it, take only one card, and agree a meeting point with anyone you are going with before you get to the ground. Rival colours are not a good idea at either end.

If you are new and looking for people, the two dependable starting points in Rio are the Digital Nomads in Rio de Janeiro group on Meetup and Rio Digital Nomads, which keeps a public calendar. Both post their events with a date and a venue, which is the test worth applying to any “weekly meetup” you see advertised in a WhatsApp group.
A word of caution on listings. Several nomad guides still point to Selina’s Lapa and Copacabana properties for rooftop mixers. Selina wound up its Brazilian operation in early 2025 and those two buildings now trade under different owners and different names, so check the venue exists before you cross town for an event.

THE WEEKEND ROUND
Round 22 of the Campeonato Brasileiro runs across Saturday and Sunday. Tonight in Rio: Botafogo v Fluminense at the Nilton Santos, 9 pm BRT. Elsewhere today, Grêmio host São Paulo at 4 pm, Remo play Atlético-MG at 6:30 pm and Coritiba meet Chapecoense at 8:30 pm.
Sunday brings the rest, and two of them matter in Rio: Bahia v Vasco at 4 pm and Flamengo v Vitória at the Maracanã at 7:30 pm. The other Sunday fixtures are Cruzeiro v Mirassol at 11 am, Palmeiras v Internacional at 4 pm, and Bragantino v Corinthians and Santos v Athletico-PR, both at 6:30 pm.
Coverage is split between Premiere, SporTV, Globo, Record and Prime Video depending on the match, so check which one carries your fixture before you settle into a bar. There are no round-22 matches on Monday.

WEEK IN FIGURES
Friday split cleanly between New York and São Paulo. US July payrolls came in at minus 23,000 against a consensus near plus 80,000, which markets read as the end of the case for another rate rise: the Nasdaq Composite rose about 1.3% to 26,690.62 and the S&P 500 closed at a record 7,757.64, with the Dow up 0.28%.
Brazil did not join in. The Ibovespa fell 1.73% to 172,513, dragged by Petrobras, and closed the week down 3.08% — its worst week since May. The one part of the global move that did reach Brazil was the currency: the real firmed about 0.46% to R$5.08 as the dollar softened. If you read elsewhere that a weak US jobs report lifted Brazilian assets, that is true of the real and not of the stock market.
The week ahead is an inflation week. Brazil’s IPCA for July lands on Tuesday 11 August, IBGE’s services-sector survey follows on Wednesday 12 August, and US July CPI is published the same Wednesday at 8:30 am in New York, which is 9:30 am in Rio. Anyone paid in dollars and spending in reais should watch the second of those rather than the first.
