Rio de Janeiro — Rio wakes to a clear, warm winter Sunday made for walking between Centro’s reopened cultural spaces.

The day’s headline is Vasco hosting Santos at São Januário.

The business board tells the story of a soft US retail reading and a mixed close for Latin American equities.

In one line: a clear, rainless day to be outside early, then duck into free art in Centro before a relaxed evening.

What to See & Do
SUNDAY IN RIO

TODAY’S PICK — CENTRO ART LOOP

A free walk through reopened Centro

The Museu Nacional de Belas Artes is closed today. Its partial reopening, in March 2026 after six years of restoration, admits visitors only Monday to Friday from 1pm to 5pm (last entry 4.30pm) and on the second Saturday of each month from 11am to 3pm. Entry is free.

From there, walk ten minutes to the Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil, also in Centro. It is open Wednesday to Monday from 9am to 8pm, free.

End at Paço Imperial, in Praça XV, open Tuesday to Sunday from midday to 6pm and free. All three sit within a compact historic grid.

Take Metrô Line 1 or 2 to Cinelândia station for MNBA and CCBB. A single ride costs R$7.90.

This loop keeps you indoors during the strongest sun and gives you three distinct exhibitions without spending a cent.

OUTDOORS — BEACH FIRST

Ipanema before the breeze drops

Claim sand before 10am at Posto 9 in Ipanema. The water sits near 23°C, with modelled waves around 2.0 to 2.2 m through the morning, swell about 1.7 m — check the lifeguard flags at your posto before swimming.

Walk or rent a bike along the seafront ciclovia, which is quieter on Sunday mornings. Keep valuables in a front pocket.

COFFEE & WHERE TO WORK — BOTAFOGO

Slow wifi and strong coffee

For a laptop-friendly spot, try Curto Café at Rua da Assembléia 10 in Centro, which is open weekdays only, 8am to 7pm. Order a flat white and grab a window seat.

If you need guaranteed silence, choose a coworking space near Praia de Botafogo instead. Most open by 9am on Sunday with day passes.

THE CONTRASTING PLAY — JARDIM BOTÂNICO

Green shade and quiet paths

For the opposite of the beach, enter Jardim Botânico at 8am when the light is soft. Entry is R$40 for residents and R$80 for foreigners.

Walk the palm avenue and the orchid house before the heat builds. It closes at 5pm, so late afternoon arrivals still work.

TONIGHT, AFTER 7 PM

Low-key dinner in Botafogo

Botafogo has the best casual Sunday energy. Book a table at Ferro e Farinha for wood-fired pizza, or sit at the bar at Comuna for burgers and craft beer.

Both stay busy with locals after 8pm. A post-dinner walk along Praia de Botafogo gives you Sugarloaf lit up across the water.

No need to chase a late party. Sunday ends early here, which suits a mellow evening.

ALSO ON TODAY

Museu do Amanhã — Praça Mauá, Centro — 10am to 6pm, R$40 (US$7.66) / half R$20 (US$3.83), science and future-facing exhibits

Parque Lage — Jardim Botânico — from 8am, free, forest-edge garden and historic mansion

MAR – Museu de Arte do Rio — Praça Mauá, Centro — 11am to 6pm, R$20 / free Tuesday, Brazilian art in a restored port warehouse

Jardim Botânico — Rua Jardim Botânico — 8am to 5pm, R$40 / R$80, tropical collections and shaded paths

Feira de Ipanema — Praça General Osório, Ipanema — Sundays 8am to 8pm, craft and food stalls running since 1968, free to browse

04
Getting Around
TRANSPORT

Metrô Lines 1, 2 and 4 run on a Sunday schedule with no announced disruptions today. The single fare is R$7.90.

The seafront ciclovia is open to bikes and foot traffic. Ride apps are easy to find in Zona Sul, but expect a short surge near the beach around midday.

05
Where to Eat
LUNCH & DINNER

Lunch: For a light lunch in Centro, note that Confeitaria Colombo’s Centro house is closed on Sundays; its Copacabana branch inside the Forte de Copacabana opens 10am to 7pm, or walk to Beco do Boticário for a quieter patio plate. Both sit near the museums.

Dinner: In Botafogo, Ferro e Farinha serves crisp pizzas around R$60–80. Comuna offers burgers and local beers in a low-lit room for a relaxed Sunday finish.

06
Practical Info
GOOD TO KNOW

Carry small bills and Pix for cafés and stalls. Many museums and smaller vendors may not take international cards.

Sunscreen and water are essential. The dry air hides the UV strength.

One safety note: avoid walking alone through the narrow streets north of Praça XV after dark. Stay on the main avenues and use a ride app back to Zona Sul.

07
Community & Lifestyle
FOR NEWCOMERS

The Sunday Ipanema craft fair at Praça General Osório often becomes an informal meetup for expats. Go early to browse and chat.

For a more structured connection, check the Rio Digital Nomads group on WhatsApp or Meetup. They often plan a Sunday coffee or beach volleyball session.

08
Game Day
THE WEEKEND ROUND

Vasco host Santos at São Januário at 4pm in round 23 of the Brasileirão. The match is sold out, and CET-Rio closes streets around the stadium from 10am, with parking banned in the area from midnight. Flamengo play away at Mirassol and Botafogo away at Vitória in Salvador, both at 6.30pm. Fluminense beat Palmeiras 3-2 at the Maracanã on Saturday.

If you still want the stadium atmosphere, book ahead for the next midweek fixture. Botafogo and Fluminense both draw well at the Nilton Santos and Maracanã.

For a Sunday watch spot, try Botafogo bars like Comuna or a sports bar in Copacabana. Screens will show whatever international football is on.

09
Business & Markets
WEEK IN FIGURES

The Week in Figures board captures a mixed session for Latin American markets. US retail data disappointed, and major American indices eased from recent highs.

In Brazil, the Ibovespa remains in a longer losing streak as investors digest the central bank’s recent rate decision. Mexico’s market lagged despite a softer dollar.

Chile and Colombia closed as brighter spots, while Argentina’s equity market slipped below a key level. The week ahead will watch US consumer signals and any fresh local policy noise.
