Ruben Amorim has challenged Marcus Rashford to step up and lead by example if he wants to return to the Manchester United squad.

Rashford has been left out of Amorim's last three matchday squads, having publicly admitted his desire to seek a new challenge after being omitted from the Manchester derby side.

Quizzed on what Rashford had failed to show him that other players in the United squad have, Amorim insisted the 27-year-old has a unique set of responsibilities which he has not yet lived up to.

"Like any other player, the best that they can be," he said. "If you have big talents, [I expect] big performance, big responsibility, big engagement, push everybody forward in this moment. Some guys have a big responsibility here because they have been here for a long time.

"This is maybe one of the lowest moments in our club, so we have to face it and be strong in this moment. That's what I want from every player on the team."

Amorim went on to confirm reports that Sir Jim Ratcliffe and those in charge at United were not involved in his decision to drop Rashford.

"He wants to play," Amorim said of Rashford. "He's trying. It's my decision and only my decision.

"I spoke with a lot of players individually during training. I'm doing things my way. It's the only way I know. If I don't do that, I would lose myself, and I will not lose myself. I know what I am doing."
