Ukraine has launched a new counterattack against Russia’s Kursk region on Sunday, warning Moscow it’s “getting what it deserves.”

Ukrainian forces have renewed their efforts in Kursk with a new wave of attacks to repel Russian forces as Moscow struggles to reclaim the territory Kyiv is currently occupying following their successful surprise counter-invasion last August.

“Kursk region, good news, Russia is getting what it deserves,” touted Andriy Yermak, the head of the Ukrainian Presidential Office.

The Ukrainian Center for Countering Disinformation confirmed Sunday’s latest strike against Moscow’s forces, which have recently received reinforcement from North Korean troops.

The Russian Defense Ministry said one of Sunday’s battles took place in the village of Berdin, some 10 miles from the border, with the Kremlin allegedly repelling an assault from two Ukrainian tanks and 12 armored vehicles, according to the state-owned TASS news agency.

Ukraine and Russia’s claims could not be independently verified.

Pro-Russian military bloggers, which have become a key source of information about the battle along the frontlines, claim Ukrainian tank units and armored vehicles were also fighting Russian forces in the Sudzha district, another city near the border.

Col. Oleksii Dmytrashkivskyi, a press officer for the military commandant’s office in Kursk, accused Russia of systematically destroying the border village “floor by floor, block by block,” as it prepares for a full assault against Kyiv’s troops that is already catching Moscow’s own citizens in the crossfire, CNN reported.

“There are currently approximately 2,000 people there,” Dmytrashkivskyi said about the occupied Russian citizens who have yet to be evacuated due to the bombardments.

“About 39 people have been killed by air and artillery strikes, and more than 100 have been wounded,” he added.

The latest fighting in Kursk comes just a day after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky claimed Russia lost an entire battalion of its own paratroopers and North Korean soldiers in a battle near the village of Makhnovka, located just south of Sudzha.

The White House estimates that more than 1,000 North Korean soldiers have been killed fighting in the Kursk region in the last week of December alone, about 10% of the total Pyongyang troops deployed in Russia.

The North Korean troops are allegedly being used as expandable foot soldiers forced to attack in a “human wave” to try and whittle down Kyiv’s defenses, said US National Security spokesman John Kirby.
