Moscow and Washington have warned each other about planned launches of intercontinental ballistic missiles, Russian news agencies cited Sergei Karakayev, commander of the Russian Strategic Missile Forces, as saying on Monday.

“The Russian Federation informs the American side at least 24 hours in advance about any planned launch of intercontinental ballistic missiles and submarine-launched ballistic missiles,” Russia’s RIA state news agency cited Karakayev as saying in an interview with the Krasnaya Zvezda defence ministry newspaper.

“The United States of America also provides similar information. Such notification shall include the planned launch date, launch location and warhead impact area.”

Russia’s strategic missile forces plan maximum-range launches as part of state testing of prospective new systems, Karakayev said, adding that Russia may increase the frequency of missile testing as external threats grow.

He also said Russia may increase the number of nuclear warheads on deployed carriers in response to similar actions by the US.
