Ryan Wesley Routh pleaded not guilty on Monday to charges stemming from the alleged attempted assassination of former President Trump earlier this month, multiple outlets reported.
The big picture: Routh, 58, faces seven counts for the second assassination attempt on the Republican presidential nominee this year.
- Routh allegedly staked out waiting for Trump at his Florida golf club. A Secret Service agent spotted him pointing a rifle through a fence before he fired any shots.
Zoom in: Routh was charged with the attempted assassination of a major presidential candidate and four other counts in connection with the Sept. 15 incident, including assaulting a federal police officer, per the federal grand jury indictment.
- The charges include possessing a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence, felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition and possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number.
Worth noting: Routh was previously convicted of felonies in North Carolina in December 2002 and March 2010, per court records cited by the Justice Department.
