KOTA KINABALU – A mother’s last effort was to try and save her son before they were hit by a train along the Petagas railway tracks in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, on Nov 19 afternoon.
According to people at the scene, the 41-year-old woman was believed to have pushed her son away from her in an attempt to get him to safety moments before she was crushed under the train.
Putatan fire station chief Noor Sherriyana Bohari said Ms Lena Gabin died on the spot while her 11-year-old son lost a foot and sustained severe arm and head injuries.
She said, according to witnesses, the two were crossing the railway tracks as the train approached and could not get across in time.
They believe they had just come from the son’s school and were walking home to Kampung Muhibbah, just past the railway tracks.
The woman was dragged some 20m from where she was hit, while her son was found sitting up crying in pain some distance away.
Ms Noor Sherriyana said the fire station received an emergency call at 1.58pm and reached the scene at 2.20pm.
They helped get the woman’s body off the tracks and handed the remains to the police for further action, while the child was attended to by medical officers at the scene before being taken to hospital, she added.
