San Jose climber plummets 500ft down notorious Mount Shasta before crawling to remote cabin

A San Jose climber remarkably survived after plummeting 500ft down Mount Shasta before crawling to a remote cabin where he was rescued.

The man, who has not been named, tried to glissade — a controlled slide down a snow slope — down a cliff on the active volcano on Thursday evening.

But he lost control and tumbled 500ft down the state’s fifth-largest peak. With a dead phone and severe injuries to his feet, the man crawled further down the mountain through the night.

He had to remove his boots due to painful swelling in his feet. His friends became concerned about the man after not hearing from him and reported him missing.

Search and rescue teams began frantically looking around 2pm Friday.

But the San Jose climber managed to drag himself into Horse Camp Cabin, several miles down the mountain.

The descent is rigorous and required the man to climb down several thousand feet over rocky terrain.

A hiker found him at the cabin and told rescuers. The man needed to be airlifted to hospital, with a photo showing him limping alongside two helpers to the chopper.

Mount Shasta is a rigorous 14,000ft peak for climbers to summit, and officials made several recommendations to climbers after the man’s harrowing story.

As the man did, officials recommend telling friends if you plan on hiking. His friends traveled down from the Bay Area to help look for him.

They also warned to make a plan to summit the mountain by noon, much earlier than the man’s evening arrival time.

Lastly, officials advise climbers to know their route well and not solely rely on a GPS or phone to navigate. The San Jose climber made his way back down with no map, officials noted.

“The Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the USFS Climbing Rangers, SAR volunteers, and CHP Helicopter team for their assistance in this search.

“Additionally, we would like to thank the hiker that located the missing man and alerted authorities,” officials wrote.

Mount Shasta is located in Northern California about 60 miles north of Redding.
