Newly-elected lawmaker Rep. Sarah McBride says she'll abide by a new House policy on transgender bathrooms – saying she'll keep her focus on the kitchen table issues that got her to Congress.

'I’m not here to fight about bathrooms. I’m here to fight for Delawareans and to bring down costs facing families,' she posted after House Republicans imposed the ban weeks before she is set to be sworn in.

The first openly transgender lawmaker will have to use the men's bathroom after she is sworn in in January.

That could include the crowded and conveniently located men's room just off the Speaker's Lobby where male lawmakers in dark suits sometimes duck in to relieve themselves between votes.

'Like all members, I will follow the rules as outlined by Speaker Johnson, even if I disagree with them,' she wrote in a statement obtained by DailyMail.com and later posted online.

'This effort to distract from the real issues facing this country hasn't distracted me over the last several days, as I've remained hard at work preparing to represent the greatest state in the union come January,' she went on.

She said serving in Congress will be the 'honor of a lifetime,' and looks forward to getting to know future colleagues on both sides of the aisle, after previously calling the ban a distraction.

It follows a week of outrage from Greene and Mace, who have called McBride a 'man', a predator and accused her of being 'mentally ill.'

Congresswoman-elect Sarah McBride will be the first transgender member of Congress. On Wednesday, Speaker Johnson announced single-sex facilities at the U.S. Capitol are reserved for that biological sex, banning her from using the women's room on Capitol Hill

The statement echoes the above-the-fray posture she took in her race, where she told voters in her home state that 'too many politicians want to divide us' and called for 'blocking out the noise and focusing on what actually matters isn't easy.'

She is stepping in to fill the seat of incoming Sen. Lisa Blunt Rochester in President Biden's home state.

Backing up his incoming colleague was Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.).

He posted on Twitter: 'There’s no job I’m afraid to lose if it requires me to degrade anyone. If that’s a defining issue for a voter, there will be a different candidate. We have a bathroom in my office that anybody is welcome to use, including Representative-elect Sarah McBride.'

McBride will also have a bathroom in her congressional office.

South Carolina Rep. Nancy Mace introduced a bill to ban transgender women from using female restrooms on Capitol Hill and acknowledged that it was about McBride.

She called McBride a 'man', a predator and accused her of being 'mentally ill.'

McBride posted on the matter and said she is 'not here to fight about bathrooms'

Coming out of the private meeting with GOP leadership on Tuesday, Greene ripped into a reporter asking about her opposition to Representative-elect Sarah McBride using the women's restroom in the Capitol

Speaker Mike Johnson was asked during a news conference on November 19 whether freshman Sarah McBride, who is transgender, is a man or woman. He responded that he is 'not going to get into this' and all new members are welcomed. He said 'concern about  the uses of restroom facilities' will be addressed 'in a deliberate fashion with member consensus'

Johnson, the Trump-aligned House Speaker presiding over a razor-thin majority,   weighed in on the controversy in a statement Wednesday saying McBride would have to use the restroom of her biological sex.

'All single-sex facilities in the Capitol and House Office Buildings — such as restrooms, changing rooms, and locker rooms — are reserved for individuals of that biological sex,' Johnson said in his statement.

Egging her on was Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, who inveighed against 'mentally ill men pretending to be women invading our spaces.'

'Yes, he's mentally ill. He's a biological male pretending to be a woman,' she said of her future colleague.

Trump has pledged to stop taxpayer funding for sex change treatments, block transgender people from entering the military, and ban trans athletes from women's sports.

That last policy position was one of the biggest applause lines at his campaign rallies, and was featured in wall-to-wall TV ads by his campaign.
