Sauti za Busara, the Zanzibar music festival first held in 2004, returns to Stone Town from Friday 19 to Sunday 21 March 2027. Early-bird three-day passes for foreign visitors cost 330,000 shillings (about US$125) and are listed for sale until 31 October 2026.

Sauti za Busara, whose name means “sounds of wisdom”, holds its 24th edition in Stone Town, Zanzibar, from Friday 19 to Sunday 21 March 2027. The organiser moved the festival from its first dates of 11 to 14 March in consideration of the holy month of Ramadan and the Eid celebrations.

For US readers the practical points are an early-bird deadline on 31 October, a visa and a new government travel insurance rule for foreign visitors. Passes are priced in Tanzanian shillings, so a US card is charged at the exchange rate of the day.

An African Music Festival Since 2004

Busara Promotions, a non-profit organisation based in Zanzibar since 2003, runs the festival to create professional work for musicians in East Africa. When it picks artists, it gives priority to women and to young and emerging talent from the region.

The call for artists for 2027 welcomed styles from Afro-fusion, taarab and traditional roots music to jazz, hip hop and reggae. Applications closed on 30 June 2026, and the organiser now says the first line-up announcements are coming soon.

The 2026 edition ran from 5 to 8 February, and Tanzania’s Daily News had announced more than 400 musicians from 21 countries. Malian singer Salif Keita was billed as headliner but cancelled because of illness, Fumba Town’s news site reported.

Each edition opens with a carnival parade of floats, traditional costumes and music through the streets of Stone Town. The organiser calls the parade the festival’s official opening act.

A New Home Outside the Old Fort

For more than 22 years the festival filled the Old Fort on the Stone Town seafront, which Fumba Town’s news site says is being modernised. In 2026 it moved to the Mnazi Mmoja grounds, a larger and greener site in Stone Town, according to the Daily News.

The 2027 ticket page lists only Stone Town as the location and names no venue. Its pass descriptions mention a main stage with a VIP grandstand, an amphitheatre, an area called Mivinje, a food court and other public areas.

Busara Promotions signed a five-year partnership with Fumba Town, a new town built by the developer CPS Africa, as the 2026 festival opened. Neither side has said whether that deal affects where the 2027 festival takes place.

Passes and Prices for 2027

The festival sells five kinds of three-day pass through its own ticket page, all priced in Tanzanian shillings. Dollar figures here use 2,640 shillings to the US dollar, the rounded close on Friday 16 October 2026.

The Regular International Pass costs 330,000 shillings (about US$125) and covers the main stage, the Mivinje area, the food court and all other public areas. The VIP Grandstand Pass costs 460,000 shillings (about US$174) and adds grandstand seats, a VIP bar and VIP restrooms, with only 50 on offer.

Holders of an African passport or of a residence permit from an East African Community country pay 165,000 shillings (about US$63), half the international price. Tanzanian citizens with a valid ID pay 30,000 shillings (about US$11), or 230,000 shillings (about US$87) for VIP seats.

All of these passes are listed for sale until 31 October 2026, and the festival calls them early-bird tickets. Prices after that date have not been published, and one order can hold up to 10 tickets.

Payment is by credit or debit card or Tanzanian mobile money, and buyers enter the name, nationality and birth year of every guest. Inside the festival, bars and food stalls take payment only through a cashless wristband chip that is topped up on site.

The first top-up carries a one-time activation fee of 1,500 shillings (about US$0.57). Unused balances of at least 5,000 shillings (about US$1.89) can be refunded until 4 p.m. on Monday 22 March 2027.

What It Means for You

US citizens need a Tanzanian tourist visa, and the State Department page lists a one-year multiple-entry visa for US$100. It can be bought online in advance as an e-visa or on arrival, and passports need six months of validity and one blank page.

Since 1 October 2026, foreign visitors entering through mainland Tanzania must also buy a government inbound travel insurance policy for US$44, valid for up to 92 days. Visitors who fly straight into Zanzibar buy the equivalent cover from the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation instead, according to the Norwegian embassy in Dar es Salaam.

The State Department rates Tanzania at Level 3, reconsider travel, in an advisory issued on 31 October 2025 that cites unrest, crime, terrorism and the targeting of gay and lesbian people. Its country page also warns that immigration officers on Zanzibar may deny entry to gay, lesbian and bisexual travellers.

A yellow fever certificate is required only from travellers arriving from a country where the disease is endemic. Non-resident US citizens may not bring Tanzanian shillings into the country or take them out, so change money after arrival.

The festival lists international connections to Zanzibar via Addis Ababa, Nairobi, Amsterdam, Paris, Frankfurt, Muscat, Doha, Dubai and Istanbul. From Dar es Salaam, fast ferries cross in about two hours, and the State Department advises taking the high-speed ferry with tickets bought inside the terminal or online in advance.

The festival’s own guide puts taxis from the airport at up to US$15 and rides within town at up to US$5. It also asks visitors to cover up in the streets of Stone Town, where showing too much skin may offend local Muslim standards.

What Is Not Known

No artists have been announced for 2027, and the organiser says only that the first names are coming soon. The festival has not published a venue, daily schedule or stage times for 19 to 21 March.

It is also unclear what passes will cost after the early-bird sale ends on 31 October, or whether one-day tickets will be sold again. The festival’s cashless page mentions cards for one-day tickets, but the 2027 ticket page lists only three-day passes for now.
