A number of schools have been forced to close today as the Met Office issues three yellow snow and ice warnings.

The UK's national weather service warned of "disruptive" conditions across the West Midlands, Greater Manchester, North Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Thousands of pupils have already been impacted by the return of sub-freezing temperatures, with several schools closing for the day.

Some in Yorkshire were forced to close after heavy snowfall was announced, with others in Oxfordshire shutting due to electrical and water supply issues.

Pupils in Berkshire, Herefordshire and Nottinghamshire have also been hit with school closures.

Parents have been advised to check online to see if their child's school has been impacted by poor weather conditions.

School closures come after the Met Office warned up to 20 centimetres of snow could fall in parts of Scotland.

The UK's national weather service said: "Snow and hail showers will affect northern parts of Scotland at times, becoming heavier and more frequent on Monday night, through much of Tuesday and then overnight into Wednesday morning. 2 to 5 cm of snow is likely to accumulate quite widely, with up to 10 cm in some places by the end of Tuesday, and perhaps 15 to 20 cm accumulating above 300 metres."
