A major new analysis published today in the British Journal of Nutrition suggests consuming approximately a handful of nuts each day could substantially reduce one's chances of developing high blood pressure.
The research, which drew on data from more than 143,000 individuals, found a daily intake of roughly 28 grams of nuts was associated with a 20 per cent lower relative risk of hypertension. When intake reached 30 to 35 grams per day, the modelled reduction climbed to 26 per cent.
Hypertension remains a pressing global health challenge, affecting an estimated 1.4 billion people and contributing to nearly eight per cent of disability-adjusted life years worldwide.
The study was a meta-analysis pooling eight prospective cohort studies, encompassing 143,380 participants — of whom 20,665 had been diagnosed with hypertension — ranging in age from 18 to 87.

The research spanned three continents, with three studies originating from the United States; three from Asian nations, including Iran, China, and South Korea; and two from European countries, namely France and Spain.
Investigators applied the World Cancer Research Fund grading criteria to evaluate the strength of evidence. Both linear and non-linear dose-response relationships were examined using random-effects models.
The benefit appeared to plateau at around 25 to 30 grams daily, with the non-linear curve flattening beyond that threshold.
The researchers assessed the likelihood of a causal relationship as probable, applying the WCRF framework to reach that judgement. They did, however, acknowledge that residual confounding cannot be entirely excluded.
Across most subgroup analyses — which examined variables such as sex, follow-up duration, geographical location, and study quality — the protective association held firm, with no meaningful differences detected between groups.
Despite the relatively modest pool of just eight studies, tests for publication bias, including Egger's test and funnel plot inspection, revealed no cause for concern. Sensitivity analyses further confirmed the robustness of the overall findings.
Several notable caveats temper the findings.
The studies relied largely on single baseline dietary assessments, introducing the possibility of measurement error, and no distinction was drawn between salted and unsalted varieties — a significant omission given salt's well-established role in raising blood pressure.

The analysis also lacked data from Africa and the Indian subcontinent, meaning the results may not be generalisable across all populations and ethnic groups.
The authors called for future investigations involving more diverse cohorts, exploration of individual nut types and deeper inquiry into the specific metabolic pathways through which nuts might confer their apparent cardiovascular benefits.
